How The Sun Rose
I could see early on in our homeschool journey that math was going to be a challenge for our son who was fine with 2+2=3. Fortunately, I knew a bit about how math is taught in Waldorf schools and it has saved us from many possible frustrating math moments. One of our biggest successes with Waldorf math is skip counting, which will make multiplication so much easier. One technique we us is saying the numbers as we wrap yarn on a ring board that has 10 pegs numbered 09. (It is a great fine motor exercise as well.) skip counting the 1's (1, 2, 3, etc.) 2's (2, 4, 6, 8, etc.) 3's (3, 6, 9, 12, up to 30) to wrap for 12 & up use the single digit number (i.e. 12 wraps on the 2, 15 wraps on the 5, etc) 4's (4, 8 12, etc) 5's (5,10, etc.) Beyond 5 the numbers become mirror images of earlier numbers (6 wraps around the same numbers as 4, 7 matches 3, 8 matches 2, and 9 matches 1.) To make your own number wheel, purchase a round wood disc, and a dowel rod, both of which can be found at craft stores (Ours has a 5" diameter.) To figure out where to drill the holes, wrap a piece of string around the outside diameter of the disc & cut it where the ends meet. Measure the string and divide it by 10 & you will know how far apart to drill the holes. Drill 10 small holes, glue in 1/2 inch dowel rods, write on the numbers and you are ready to go. Our kids are fascinated as they wind the yarn around the pegs to find that simple math can lead to beautiful design. We have several other ways we practice Waldorf math and skip counting that I will be sharing in future posts.

Teaching math skills
Building Fact Families Awhile back, I saw a great idea from Margaret at KinderJourney. She was using clothes pins and craft sticks to build sight words. I loved the idea because kids enjoy working with the materials and get to develop important fine motor skills while also working with academic tasks. My kids couldn't get enough, so we started using these materials to build addition facts and then fact families. To build addition facts, just write the addition sign and equals sign on the craft sticks. Provide kids with sets of clothespins with numbers you are working with. My kids love to fill a table with facts they have built! Kids love building fact families too! I put the craft sticks and number pins that kids will need to build one fact family in a large ziploc bag. Kids then act as detectives to figure out what fact family they can build using these components. To develop an understanding of missing addend problems, kids pick up a "fact" and remove one of the pins. Their partner has to figure out what number pin they removed. Works for multiplication/division fact families as well. If you decide to try this out, I'd love to hear how it works for you! Thanks for stopping by! Anne

Number Grid, Divers And Co, Numbers, Homeschool Math, Free 100, Homeschool Free
A fun way for kids to play with numbers, patterns and develop their number sense is with 100 grids. Here are some different patterns that can be colored on the grids. The first one is all the even numbers or counting by two's. Counting by three's creates a diagonal pattern. On this all the double numbers are colored (11, 22, 33, 44,...., 99) which is the same as counting by eleven's. Try coloring other patterns to see what happens. Try counting by fours starting on the number five (5, 9, 13, 17.......) or the Fibonacci pattern (add the sum of the two previous numbers in the pattern to get 1,2,3,5,7,12,19,31......). To make this activity easier I created a Blank 100 Grid and a Filled in 100 Grid. Please feel free to make use of them. This post is linked to: Kids Math Teacher
