Evening Dress 1857, American, Made of silk ~~~~~ This dress was worn by Mrs. James Bonner Collins, to a White House Reception for James Buchanan (1791-1868). Its elegance is enhanced by the unique inclusion of a plain stripe textile in the pleats of the skirt. These vertical stripes help elevate and elongate the already eye-catching gown.
