Saint Patrick’s Day became an instant hit when it was first introduced by the Catholic Church in the 17th Century, because it was ruled that anything given up for the forty days of Lent would be permissible for those twenty-four hours. Meat? Fill up your plate. Sweets? Same. Alcohol? You bet.
