Sleeping Porch in Shabby Chic~
Daybed /Cottage sleeping porch
Our Boo approved sleeping porch. One of her favorite places. For the past few months my husband and I have been utilizing our sleeping porch at night. If you don’t know what a sleeping porch is, no worries, most homes built in the last 50 years don’t have one. But for homes that existed before there was air conditioning, especially those built at the turn of the last century, they were quite popular. I can now see why. In summers past we tried opening some windows and the upstairs door, but it was still miserable. Then you’d walk out onto the screened-in porch and it would feel amazing. So this year we set up a bed on the porch. It took a few days to get used to the different sounds (birds, frogs, etc), but now we can filter the noises and still get plenty of Zs. Sleeping porches traditionally have distinct features such as screens on at least two sides made to catch the breeze. Most are located on the second story of the house, unless your home is a single story. For those with newer construction, consider transforming a back patio into a screened in porch. You see these all the time in the south. As people watch their pennies and look for more sustainable ways to heat and cool their homes, sleeping porches might make a comeback. They offer us a chance to enjoy summer at its best and relax under the stars without fear of the elements or bugs. Has using a sleeping porch made a difference? Yes! For one, it’s much cooler than using the a/c and any slight breeze from the north comes our way. The temperatures at night usually range in the mid seventies to low sixties outside, so it’s perfect. Two, our electric bill has been cut in half each month (when compared to summers past). And three, my summer allergies have been much better than when we have the air on all the time (emphasis on “much”). And while a couple nights have been spent indoors due to it being too hot or our neighbor blasting music and yelling obscenities with a country twang (you know who you are), most nights are calm, quiet and wonderful. Our summer bedroom As fall moves closer, we plan to keep using the porch till it’s too cold. For now I can go to sleep with the moon as my night light and sometimes catch a shooting star before I shut my eyes. In the morning the birds are singing and I wake up to greenery and the sight of our towering sunflowers. Who knew the best bed could be located on the porch? http://arquitetura-pessoal.tumblr.com/post/10124620034/berengia-garden-shed-bed http://www.houzz.com/ideabooks/4685/list/DIY-Projects--Outfitting-a-Sleeping-Porch http://media-cache-ec6.pinterest.com/upload/21955116903139456_SgzlkqfO.jpg http://highdeserteden.com/casita.html http://www.countryliving.com/homes/house-tours/maine-cottage-decorating http://mylovelythings.blogspot.com/ http://blog.stylizimo.com/search/label/DIY http://www.freshhomeideas.com/room-ideas/white/white-bedrooms http://arquitetura-pessoal.tumblr.com/post/10124620034/berengia-garden-shed-bed#.UBwND_aPUsc

Yummy, drinks are no me!!!
It's a holiday weekend and most of us will be partaking in a drink or few. I'm headed to Savannah for a day on the water, and after a long day on the boatﾂI sometimes like aﾂSalty Dog or a Greyhound back at the house. Thereﾂis something nostalgicﾂfor me and these grapefruit cocktails. Probablyﾂfromﾂstealing sips from my parent's drinksﾂas a kid...
