"Two Sisters On the Terrace," by Pierre-Auguste Renoir. My French ancestry is not what makes me like his work--he is just an artist who seems to do Subjects that I would do if I painted in Oil. When you see the REAL work of art at the Art Institute of Chicago, you will be amazed!
Georges Seurat 1859-1891: Acknowledged as a leader of the avant-garde Seurat was fascinated by the science of light and color and used the primary colors placed in tiny dots on a flat colored background. This technique was known as pointillism.

'She turns and looks a moment in the glass, / Hardly aware of her departed lover; / Her brain allows one half-formed thought to pass: / “Well now that’s done: and I’m glad it’s over.” / When lovely woman stoops to folly and Paces about her room again, alone, She smoothes her hair with automatic hand, / And puts a record on the gramophone.' - Eliot: The Wasteland

"Carnation Lily, Lily Rose" by John Singer Sargent
Lights, Lilies Rose, Artists, John Singer Sargent, Lilies Lilies, Gardens, Lanterns, Painting, Carnations Lilies
I always had Carnation Lily Lily Rose in mind when writing the book. it is one of my favourite paintings (by John Singer Sargent). He painted it over a period of several months in the evening dusk each night just to capture that curious quality of the light. I love the girls' absorption of what they're doing and the Chinese lanterns, and the sense of an English garden around them. It doesn't feature in the book, just was important for the feeling overall.
Carnation, Lily, Lily, Rose by John Singer Sargent. One of my favorite paintings by one of my favorite artists. I saw this on exhibit in Boston and was amazed at how the lanterns seemed to glow from within.
