Reading quote by Nora Ephron
if only i can word it so well myself. but it is so true for me, reading did calm my ADD and now i can sit still for long periods of time. Reading a good book is so much more then reading words on a page. Well said Nora and rest in peace

This is my all-time favourite book. Maybe because of the great characters and the adventures they have, maybe because I love Scout's attitude, mayber because I remember my dad reading it to me and my siblings, but mostly because I'm pretty sure my dad IS Atticus Finch.

Who has never wondered if there might not really be a tempter sitting on our shoulders or dogging our steps? C.S. Lewis dispels all doubts. In The Screwtape Letters, one of his bestselling works, we are made privy to the instructional correspondence between a senior demon, Screwtape, and his wannabe diabolical nephew Wormwood. As mentor, Screwtape coaches Wormwood in the finer points, tempting his "patient" away from God. One of my all time favs!!

The Screwtape Letters by CS Lewis
Who among us has never wondered if there might not really be a tempter sitting on our shoulders or dogging our steps? Each letter is a masterpiece of reverse theology, giving the reader an inside look at the thinking and means of temptation. Tempters, according to Lewis, have two motives: the first is fear of punishment, the second a hunger to consume or dominate other beings. On the other hand, the goal of the Creator is to woo us unto himself or to transform us through his love from "tools into servants and servants into sons." It is the dichotomy between being consumed and subsumed completely into another's identity or being liberated to be utterly ourselves that Lewis explores with his razor-sharp insight and wit. The most brilliant feature of The Screwtape Letters may be likening hell to a bureaucracy in which "everyone is perpetually concerned about his own dignity and advancement, where everyone has a grievance, and where everyone lives the deadly serious passions of envy, self-importance, and resentment." We all understand bureaucracies, be it the Department of Motor Vehicles, the IRS, or one of our own making. So we each understand the temptations that slowly lure us into hell. If you've never read Lewis, The Screwtape Letters is a great place to start. And if you know Lewis, but haven't read this, you've missed one of his core writings.

The Hunger Games (Trilogy) is one of the most "unputdownable" books to enter the teen market in a long time. The cliffhangers at the end of each volume are so intense, you can't help but continue on. Knowing this in advance, I decided against reading the series last summer despite the fact that everyone was talking about it. I waited the extra year, and I'm glad I did--even a week was torture when it came to getting my grubby mitts on a copy of Mockingjay. For the record, this isn't a series for everyone. You will be drained emotionally by its end. The Hunger Games is one of the grimmest dystopian worlds I've encountered in literature. A lot of characters die, and their deaths aren't pleasant. This series may not be for you. Then again, those who know me well would say it's not for me, either. I'm one of the most squeamish people you'll meet, and The Hunger Games more closesly resembles the movie Battle Royale than I thought it would when I started reading. I really enjoyed the series, though. There are scenes so poignant, they'll stick with me. Between this and Stieg Larsson's Millennium Trilogy, I've found that even squeamish ole me can still enjoy a disturbing book if it's thought-provoking and well-written. Now that I've warned you about the contents, let's move on to the meat of this review. It's hard to go in-depth without giving a lot away. A brief synopsis for the uninitiated: The trilogy takes place in the future. The USA has been destroyed; in its place is Panem, which consists of thirteen districts and a Capitol city. Before the series begins, the districts revolt against the Capitol and are defeated; the thirteenth is completely obliterated. As retribution for their crimes, each district is now required to send a boy and girl, called tributes, to participate in the annual Hunger Games. The games are centered around survival; there can only be one winner (Luckily, most of the deaths occur off-page, so it makes it easier for the squeamish to read). The characters are very rich and detailed; some of their deaths hit incredibly hard and are forever memorable. In the second book, Catching Fire, there is a lot of unease in the districts, and a lot of anger when the year's Hunger Games take a twisted turn and past winners are forced to battle it out for survival. The final book, Mockingjay, consists of a full out rebellion; the districts are at war with the Capitol and it's do or die in a showdown so explosive, readers never see it coming. All in all, I'm personally glad I've read this series and wouldn't change a thing. I'm glad I didn't sidestep it due to its violent nature and extreme situations. This trilogy is one I'll read again to delve into the intricate layers I know Collins has laid out for us. Collins is a master at capturing a society at war and showing the horrors that come when a corrupt government is in control.
Fav series :)

Worth Reading, Book Worms, Jodie Picoult, Book Book, Book Worth, Jodi Picoult, Favorite Book, Police Chiefs, Mercy
One of my favorite books by Jodi Picoult. It was filled with love, emotion, and raised the question about what is moral and immoral when it comes to loved ones.
Mercy by Jodi Picoult ~ 3 words: Remember the prologue. This is how I will start this.... and how I will finish. I honestly don't even know how to review this one. First let me say that I LOVE Jodi Picoult. I have loved every book that I have read of hers so far, up until now. I have devoured her books like there was no tomorrow. I have wept, laughed, got angry.....shoot, she even has you siding with the criminals most of the time. But this book.... infuriated me!!! There were basically two story lines going on here.... and the one that the title of the book suggests, "Mercy", I was in love with. I would have, hands down, rated this part of the book 5 (plus) stars all day long. It involved all of the details of a "mercy killing".....the relationship (before, during and after) that takes place between this couple (Jamie and Maggie), so very much in love, and (what I love most about Jodi's books)....the courtroom drama aspect of the story. Amazing....loved every second of it. 5 * * * * * stars...there ya go.... Now the second little story line that Jodi focused on, and I still have no idea why it was probably the larger story line,....made.me.mad! Jodi touched on infidelity at it's finest! Let me just say that the protagonist of this side story.... is an ARSE! Cam... he is the town police chief, and a cheatin' SOB! I wanted to kick him in the family jewels.....and kick him and kick him!! There was soooo much sneaking around and betrayal going on right under the nose of his wife, Allie...it made me angry! Allie had even hired the "other woman", Mia, to be her assistant at the flower shop she owns..... So what do Cam and Mia do? They do IT in the flower shop, do it in Cam and Allie's home.....do it in the local hotel EVERY day!!! Mia actually spends the night in Allie's bed! WTF. I just don't know what Jodi was going for here.... did she actually think that we would find this romantic? Well, I didn't! Did she think that we, readers, would sympathize with Cam and his struggles between teeter tottering between the two women?? ~Oh my...poor Cam, he loves both women and they are both likeable women....what's a boy to do??~ Well....sorry Jodi....but Cam will never be liked by me...and I will never sympathize with the likes of infidelity! That is one thing I could not and would not EVER tolerate. Sure....he tries to suck up to Allie at the end and make things right. Pfftt... The one thing that Jodi does (that I did like)....was she sort of left it open ended at the end....so she kind of leaves it up to you to decide what happens with Allie and Cam.... I say: kick his sorry A$$ to the curb, Allie, and don't look back!!! 2 * * stars....for that lying, cheating, cold dead beating, two timing, double dealing, mean mistreating, loving heart.... as Patty Loveless would say! All of this being said..... I was ready to put it down, however just when I was about to....the best thing happened.... I remembered the prologue. If you just HAVE to read this book, just one piece of advice I can give you is, remember the prologue!! You will actually really start liking the book if you "just remember the prologue!!" And you're welcome! :o)
