Entertaining outdoors this fall? Wrap your tree trunks with strands of white LED lights you can later reuse for the holidays. Loop jute string around the base of the tree and tie the end of the light strand with the metal prongs to the string. Loop the lights around the tree, adding more strings as needed. Then add another loop of string to tie up the top end. Plug the bottom into an extension cord when it’s time to light up your party.

For quick, fun decor, combine two fall favorites: mums and apples. Use a nail, awl, or even a drill with a 1/4-inch bit to make holes in the top of each apple about 1-1/2 inches deep. Snip off mum blooms with 2-inch stems and insert them into the holes. These are best made the day of your party to keep them looking fresh.

Turn a bamboo window shade into a table runner. First snip the cords holding the bottom stick and tie the ends. Cut off the top below the roll-up mechanism and pull out enough strips to tie the strings. Mark a line down the center of the shade and cut with heavy-duty scissors or tin snips. Unroll each section and lay them end to end down the length of the table.

Make a statement with mums! These plush tabletop accents are easy to put together. Poke the short stems of individual mum blooms into a dampened floral foam ball until the ball is covered. Repeat with more blooms and balls. Arrange the mum-covered balls on a tray or in a bowl. Kept damp, the blooms can stay fresh for several days.

String lights are synonymous with party lights. Use string lights to illuminate food and drink areas, or to light an open space for dancing. They also look cool wrapped around tree trunks, deck railings or even trellises for an unexpected focal point. Add a bit of vintage flair with Edison bulb string lights or mercury ball string lights draped from a gazebo or pergola.
