"Grandma Moses" was born Anna Mary Robertson Moses on September 7, 1860. She was considered an American folk artist and one of America's best-known primitive painters (artists who did not receive a formal art education). She is a great example of a life long learner. She began a career in the arts at an advanced age. She became a painter in her seventies when embroidery became too difficult because of arthritis. Grandma Moses painted mostly scenes of rural life. Some of her many paintings were used on the covers of greeting cards. I tried to find several paintings that would show the different seasons of the year. "Grandma Moses" lived to be over 100 years old and died on December 13, 1961. She painted over 1600 paintings in a little over two decades.

Grandma Moses Painting...
Naive Art, or Outsider Art, refers to works by artists in sophisticated societies who reject or lack professional training. Naive artists create art with the same passion and intentions as trained artists, but work without formal knowledge of methods and training. Naive artwork is characterized by the use of bright strong colors, highly detailed images, and an absence of perspective (creating the fantastical illusion of forms and figures floating in space). Naive art represents memories, dreams, fantasies and scenes from every day life with an emphasis on color and shapes. Naive is often associated with Folk Art, but they are very different because of the simple fact that Naive art is less concerned with social structures, political correctness, and traditions. Naive art emerged in the last fifty years as one of contemporary art’s most important styles because it has endured the ever changing styles around it, and remains generally the same. It is interesting to note that despite the large number of primitive or naive painters around the world, they all possess a distinct unity of style. Famous Naive artists include Henri Rousseau and Grandma Moses. Grandma Moses Grandma Moses, or Anna Mary Robertson Moses, was one of the first famous primitive artists, who didn't take up painting until she was 75 years old! Her desire to paint was triggered by her inability to do needlework anymore due to her arthritis. Anna Robertson was born in 1860 in New York, was married at the age of 27, and bore 10 children out of which only 5 survived. Anna Robertson was fiesty and strong willed and after the death of her husband in 1927 she moved back to New York from Virginia. The works of Grandma Moses were discovered by an art collector, Louis Calder, during the Depression when she was trying to sell some her pieces at the Women's Exchange. Calder bought many of her pieces and by 1939 she had three showing in the Museum of Modern Art in New York City. One year later she had her first solo exhibition in New York. According to the art world Grandma Moses's paintings were of Primitive or Naive style. She painted scenes on pieces of old wood with simple textures but complex content. She portray happy real life scenes, and her style echoed stitching on fabric from her earlier years. From the start of her painting career at the age of 75 to her death at the age of 101 Grandma Moses painted about 1600 paintings. Anna Robertson may have been an amateur but she contributed greatly to the Naive Art movement of the 19th and 20th centuries.

Grandma Moses -- Born in New York in 1860, Anna Mary Robertson (who became known as "Grandma Moses") started painting in her 70s. Her nostalgic depictions of rural American life became internationally recognized and remain popular today.
Completely uneducated in art and considered a primitive and folk artist, Grandma Moses only began painting in earnest at the age of 78 when her husband died and left her some money. Her story next.

French photographer Lucien Clergue, who penned the autobiography Picasso My Friend, passed away this month. “I had a good fortune to meet Pablo Picasso at a bullring. I had stopped playing violin, and for the lack of funds I could not go to school in Paris. I started taking photographs with different cameras owned by a man close to my home,” Clergue wrote. “Picasso signed one of the print, not my best, but now it is the most expensive. When I reached the age of 20 I was still working in a factory, but I was taking photographs of five children dressed with clothes designed by me [inspired by Picasso’s circus paintings]. I was trying to make Picasso happy: he had said at the bullring, ‘I want to see more prints.’” Their relationship lasted until Picasso’s death in 1973, and that close friendship is revealed in photos of the artists together and Clergue’s portraits of the painter in his studio. Inspired by Clergue, we gathered other photos of famous artist friends.

Country Fair, circa 1950 Grandma Moses Art Oil on Pressed Wood 1990's Vintage Print - Large Poster Size Perfect for framing! Grandma Moses is arguably the greatest American fold painter of the 20th century. Born Anna Mary Robertson Moses, on September 7 1860. Money was scarce for her family of 10 children and when Anna was 12 she became a hired girl to help another family. Her schooling was limited. She married Thomas Salmon Moses, also a hired worker, in her 20's and eventually they bought a farm in New York. In her late seventies she started painting. Her first painting was made using house paint. Her art may be classified as folk art or primitive art. She painted simple pictures, scenes of family, church, and community extolling the virtues of honesty and hard work which made America great. She painted scenes familiar to the farm life. Her paintings told stories about applebutter making, making soap and maple syrup, husking corn, and making candles. She painted many pictures during her lifetime. She died at age 101. The page is approximately 10.5" x 14.5" (26.67 cm x 36.83) In very good condition, back of page has text and or pictures.
