Dante's Inferno by Karen Lunney. An entry for the People's Choice category in the Wildlife Photographer of the Year competition organised jointly by the BBC and London's Natural History Museum. Winner announced in October 2014.
Karen Lunney (Brisbane, Australia). Finalist: Natural World. During their annual migration, wildebeests are forced to find new river crossings in the Serengeti-Mara region. “The animals were being taken by the unfamiliar currents of deep water and had to struggle to get close to the far bank. There were few rocks on which to land and the initial orderly progression soon became a desperate struggle of clambering,” says Lunney. Mara River, Masai Mara National Reserve, Kenya, September 2013.

A tardigrade! (aka water bear, or moss piglet) - These animals can go for decades without food or water, survive temperatures from near absolute zero to well above the boiling point of water, survive pressures from near zero to well above that on ocean floors, and survive direct exposure to dangerous radiations. Also, they can survive in outer space. This color-enhanced electron micrograph shows the millimeter-long tardigrade craling on moss.

A Sanctuary for Enormous, Majestic Manta Rays - Last month, Indonesia established the world’s largest sanctuary for manta rays — those enormous, finned fortresses that can reach nearly 30 feet across. For the first time, manta ray hunting and export is banned within the entire 2.3 million square miles of Indonesia’s exclusive economic zone. The sanctuary is a victory for conservationists and the manta rays, as Indonesia was home to some of the largest ray fisheries in the world.
