The Dovekeepers by Alice Hoffman
Romans, Worth Reading, Books Club, Books Worth, Alice Hoffman, Alicehoffman, Red Tent, Historical Fiction, Books Review
Alice Hoffman - book club read. Can't get enough of this book.
The Dovekeepers by Alice Hoffman. I have not been so moved by a historical/religious fiction book since Anita Diamant's, "Red Tent." This book chronicles the Siege on Masada by the Romans in 70 C.E. I'm ashamed to admit I knew nothing of this tragic event. Fans of Hoffman's who, like me, may have gotten a little too used to her comforting blend of magic and romance will find this one breaks away from the rest, without loosing Hoffman's word magic and ability to flesh out amazing characters.
Inspired by the tragic massacre of hundreds of Jewish people on the Masada mountain in the Judean desert in 79AD, The Dovekeepers presents the stories of a hated daughter, a baker's wife, a girl disguised as a warrior, and a medicine woman who keeps doves and secrets while Roman soldiers draw near. Practical Magic and Skylight Confessions are also worth reading.
The Dovekeepers: A Novel by Alice Hoffman. In 70 C.E., nine hundred Jews held out for months against armies of Romans on Masada, a mountain in the Judean desert. According to the ancient historian Josephus, two women and five children survived. Based on this tragic and iconic event, Hoffman’s novel is a spellbinding tale of four extraordinarily bold, resourceful, and sensuous women, each of whom has come to Masada by a different path. Brilliant historical fiction piece. 5 out of 5

Reached book #3 in the Matched series, cant wait for it to come out in the fall!
Reached by Ally Condie. This is the third book in the Matched trilogy. Good young adult read if you like dystopian novels. THE FIRST BOOK, MATCHED, WAS AMAZING!!! I didn't like Crossed, though. A true fangirl has to stay with her fandom until the very end though, right?
Reached the new book by Ally Condie - third book of the Matched Trilogy.
3rd in the Matched series. -Can't wait to read! If you like the hunger games, you'd enjoy this series<3
Book review for Reached by Ally Condie, book 3 in the Matched trilogy. Rated 2 out of 5 stars.
Just started and finished Crossedl I read it in a single day. I do love this trilogy so far. Book one was by far better, but I obviously couldn't put this one down either. Not sure how I will stand waiting for number three. Crossed, is quite slow for a young adult read--mature readers are apt to appreciate it more than those that want fast adventures.

Book Review "Insurgent" by Veronica Roth - The Messy Owl#insurgent #veronicaroth #divergent #book #review
Summer reading: For legions of The Hunger Games fans salivating for their next dystopian survival rations, the Divergent series offers toothsome fare. Insurgent, the sequel to the first book, plunges readers deeper into Tris Prior’s brutal world, where the only certainty has been her love for Tobias, a fellow Dauntless Faction member. Wasn't my favorite book, but it was still pretty awesome. The first book was better

The Senator's Wife (Vintage Contemporaries): Sue Miller: 9780307276698: Amazon.com: Books
The Senator's Wife by Sue Miller is the story of two women -- one at the beginning of her marriage, one in her later years -- who live next door to each other. The Senator's Wife is a relatively simple story, but a compelling one nonetheless. Miller proves herself an excellent writer. The Senator's Wife is not groundbreaking, but it is a page turner that is light enough for the beach bag but thought provoking enough for book club.
The Senators Wife by Sue Miller: Two unconventional women--Meri Fowler, pregnant, newly married, and discovering the gap between reality and expectation, and Delia Naughton, wife of a notoriously unfaithful liberal senator--confront the costs and challenges of love.

ME TALK PRETTY ONE DAY by David Sedaris. David Sedaris moved to France so he could smoke freely and live with his French lover. This collection of early autobiographical essays is characterized by Sedaris's usual dry, droll, urban gay wit, limning his struggles to learn French (hence the translated title) in a class led by a teacher who "hates" him. A gem.

Art & Artist Book Club Wednesday, April 3, 2013; 12-1pm! We will discuss “The Women” by TC Boyle!
The Woman - T.C. Boyle T.C. Boyle lives in a house designed by Frank Lloyd Wright in California. Boyle and his family moved into the George C. Stewart home 16 years ago. And that, he says, is when he first started contemplating a novel about one of America's best-known architects. Now, that novel has arrived. The Women is a fictional account of Wright's life, from the perspective of the women he loved:

When the Killing's Done: A Novel. Principally set on the wild and sparsely inhabited Channel Islands off the coast of Santa Barbara, T.C.Boyle's powerful new novel combines pulse-pounding adventure with a socially conscious, richly humane tale regarding the dominion we attempt to exert, for better or worse, over the natural world. Their confrontation plays out in a series of escalating scenes in which these characters violently confront one another, and tempt the awesome destructive...

Interesting book, as much for the Victorian "language of flowers" as the plot. Worth reading.
The Language of Flowers: A Novel by Vanessa Diffenbaugh. On my To Read List.
The Language of Flowers: A Novel: Vanessa Diffenbaugh The Victorian language of flowers was used to convey romantic expressions: honeysuckle for devotion, asters for patience, and red roses for love. But for Victoria Jones, it’s been more useful in communicating mistrust and solitude. After a childhood spent in the foster-care system, she is unable to get close to anybody, and her only connection to the world is through flowers and their meanings.
Although Russian critics dismissed the novel on its publication as a "trifling romance of high life", Fyodor Dostoevsky declared it to be "flawless as a work of art". His opinion was shared by Vladimir Nabokov, who especially admired "the flawless magic of Tolstoy's style", and by William Faulkner, who described the novel as "the best ever written".

The Thousand Autumns of Jacob de Zoet is a beautifully articulated piece of historical fiction set on the island of Dejima during the time of Dutch trade concessions in Japan. The novel does a wonderful job of expressing the continual friction between European colonial trade empires and the isolationist reticence of the Japanese shogunate.

Another great read from Markus Zusak...I love a good mystery...especially one with life lessons!
Ed Kennedy is an underage cabdriver without much of a future. He's pathetic at playing cards, hopelessly in love with his best friend, Audrey, and utterly devoted to his coffee-drinking dog, the Doorman. His life is one of peaceful routine and incompetence until he inadvertently stops a bank robbery. http://www.goodreads.com/book/show/1195677.I_am_the_Messenger

Sartorial Book Club: R29ers Divulge Their Favorite Reads #refinery29 http://www.refinery29.com/57855#slide-17 Neha Gandhi, executive editor, featuresThe Book: The Blind Assassin, by Margaret Atwood "This book is one of Atwood's most accessible novels, since only part of the plot involves a futuristic, sci-fi element. It's a fascinating character study and an interesting look back at the '30s and '40s (albeit in Ontario, where the history is a bit less familiar to me). It's beautifully written, compelling from beginning to end, and keeps you on your toes the entire time. But, at the same time, it breaks from the plot consistently to take you into the story-within-a-story that its protagonist is writing. And, somehow, this manages not to be jarring. Basically, this book is proof that the Man Booker Prize winners are always the best reads. Every. Single. Time."The Blind Assassin, $12.15, available at Amazon.

The Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Pie Society. My sister made me read this, and it was definitely worth reading.
(The Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Pie Society- Mary Ann Shaffer & Annie Barrows) Great historical fiction about the island of Guernsey during WWII. Written completely in letters, which in this case, totally works. (A)
The Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Society by Mary Ann Shaffer and Annie Barrows: In 1946, as England emerges from the shadow of World War II, writer Juliet Ashton finds inspiration for her next book in her correspondence with a native of Guernsey and his eccentric friends, who tell her about their island, the books they love, German occupation, and the Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Pie Society, a book club born as an alibi during German occupation.
