Maybe she was able to keep that beautiful smile during the days of her life, and was able to put away what monstrous and obscene things she must have seen during her time in Hell.  For many, liberation from the camp freed only the body;  the mind and the soul stayed imprisoned and tormented often beyond endurance.  Suicide after liberation was not an uncommon reaction.
