Whaleback Light, Kittery, Maine

Whaleback Lighthouse (also named Whaleback Ledge Light) was built on Whaleback Ledge in Kittery, Maine to mark the entrance of the main shipping channel to the Piscataqua River and Portsmouth Harbor.

After a couple of weather-induced starts and stops, the W.H. Glover Company of Rockland completed the lighthouse on September 19, 1902. Just over a month later, on the night before Halloween, a revolving fourth-order Fresnel commenced sending out a white flash every five seconds at a focal plane of thirty-nine feet.
