Filfla is a small barren, uninhabited island which lies 5 kilometres to the south of Malta. The name is believed to come from the word “Filel”, the Arabic for a peppercorn. This tiny island has an area of just 15 acres with a crumbling flat-topped limestone plateau and 60 metre cliffs. Up until the 1970’s the British Royal Navy and Air Force used the island for live fire target practice. It became a bird reserve in the 1980’s.
