Zulu Wedding Baskets. These baskets or "ukhamba", are traditionally woven by the bride-to-be or given to the new couple as wedding gifts. The patterns are symbolic. Diamond shapes or “shields of shaka” represent the male. Triangles or “spears of shaka” represent the female. These elaborate designs and intricately-patterned baskets announce the wealth and power of the family. During the wedding, they are used to hold ceremonial beer.
