Harry Callahan. Untitled. c. 1953. I love how he highlighted the table where the hand was to accent it. Note this subtle way to draw attention to something inobvious

Texas Springs, Death Valley, 1949, Edward Weston.

Edward Weston • Texas Springs, Death Valley. 1938. The hills without the clouds would have made this shot very boring or pointless, perhaps! But Weston probably knew the spot well and waited like any other very patient photographer would do. Waited for the right moment for the clouds to gather and click. Of course, I imagined all this, but I am sure it is either this or his good luck. Weston was there at the right time, the decisive moment. Whatever it is, it is fascinating shot.
"#35 Pepper" by Edward Weston... in my opinion one of the best of photographs and one of the best of all photographers...

“A picture is the expression of an impression. If the beautiful were not in us, how would we ever recognize it?” ~ Ernst Haas
"In the morning, the sky is dark and gravid with snow. We depart early on the White Road. The Monastery house of the Priory of St. Mary Magdalene fades away behind us like a smudge on an oil-cloth window until it winks from sight. Our steeds are far from strong, the sky stinks of snow, and our luck runs counter to the dice." -- from the novel Sinful Folk http://sinfulfolk.com

On the Japanese Island of Kyushu, an outwardly healthy mother bathes her fetal-poisoned 16 year old daughter, crippled and blind since birth due to environmental industrial mercury poisoning in the local Minamata, Japan, water supply. This may be the first environmental pollution photojournalism. William Eugene Smith, who was beaten by goons hired by the offending chemical company, received the Robert Capa Gold Medal for “photography requiring exceptional courage and enterprise.”

W. Eugene Smith, The Walk to Paradise Garden, 1946. After witnessing the horrors he had during his war coverage, Smith wasn't sure if he could continue to take pictures. So he waited. This is the first photograph he took. It is of his children, and was taken in his back garden. I have loved this photo for over 20 years. It always makes my heart tender.

(Edward Steichen, 1924) This photo of silent film veteran Gloria Swanson was taken right before the debut of feature length films with sound. Being a primarily a silent-film actress, her fame naturally waned as ‘talkies’ grew in popularity. Ironically, she is best known for her role as a faded silent-film star in the critically acclaimed “Sunset Boulevard”, released in 1950.
