It is an interesting fact that the number of Red Kites is growing in Switzerland in contrast to most other countries. It is nothing unusual to see one of these raptors in the sky. Still it was quite special when I could see about ten of these animals flying in circles above me. The reason was a farmer who was cutting the grass and by that probably made available some food that they were diving for. I could even observe as one of the birds caught a big dragonfly in flight. You can see the great cormorant almost anytime in the city of Aarau along the river Aare. In the nature reserve nearby I haven't seen them often, usually just flying by. That morning I sat next to the shore of the Aarschächli in the early morning and in the fog. Suddenly two cormorants swam along quite close. In the early morning light the don't appear black, but rather shiny. Nature Photography, River, Nature Reserve, Fog, Reserve

While spending summer holidays in Northern Germany, in the countryside not far from the Baltic Sea, one evening I decided to go to a forest where I thought there could be some animals. And yes, shortly after I had installed myself under the camouflage four deer approached and enjoyed eating on the lush pasture. Later they were joined by some hares. Little hat village In autumn 2017 there were incredibly many fungi growing in our forests, thanks to the very good climatic conditions in that year. Never before had I seen so many different kinds of fungi. You only had to turn around to see another little hat village. Autumn, Forests, Fungi, Village, Bird Feeders, Growing

Taking pictures of ants is not easy at all. Usually they move quite fast and unpredictably. While I was trying to take a sharp and also nice picture I suddenly realized that this wood ant was watching me and seemingly wanted to attack me. It looked like an aggressive posture. I tried to imagine what I would hear if I were understanding their language. Ants, Nice, Pictures Of Ants, Wood Ants, Aggressive, Close Up

Beaver | It had been quite a long time since I went to the nature reserve Auenschutzpark Aarau-Wildegg to take pictures of beavers. Since recently the work of these animals has become ubiquitous in the area I was once again motivated to lie in ambush in the early morning hours. Successfully as it should turn out. But not at all surprising as I know very well where to find beavers. Occasionally some nutria and mallard ducks passed by as well, so it was diversified. Ducks, Mallard, Mallard Duck, Beaver

More stars than our eyes can see... People living in cities are often excited seeing just one star in the skye above. If you ever go to an area in the high mountains or in the desert, far away from any civilization, you might suddenly realize that our planet Earth or our star Sun are just one among many many others. The number of stars you may see is uncountable, and just belong to the Milky Way, our galaxy. And although they are uncountable they are just one corn on the beach of our universe. This waterfall in the Töss valley (Switzerland) is very easy to reach and accordingly famous. During winter however, the time I realized this picture, the walk throuth the ravine should be done with care. Myself I sustained a fall while attempting to reach a second waterfall. So I had to climb up to the trail through mud. Winter, Climbing, Waterfall, Waterscape, Valley

Sunrise above the Pre-Alps | A unexpected sight of the mountain Säntis. I have to admit that I was hoping for or even expecing a sensational sunrise that morning, but I did not expect at all to see Säntis. That was a big surprise. On this picture I could finally funfill my desire of layered mountain ranges with graduated intensity. To achieve this kind of picture you need to be at the right place at the right time, there is no other way. Mountain Range, Sunrise, Mountain, Alps

Touché - This image reminds me of a lance fighter... I could mug this grasshopper at a magnification of five with my magnifying lens. Thereby even a small animal with a body length of just about one and a half centimeters suddenly becomes a giant. Extreme macro photography allows an insight in a unknown world invisible to our eyes. Snake's head (Fritillaria meleagris) | This extremely rare flower only grows on special grounds. In Switzerland there are just two places where they can be found. The more important of them is in the Newbourgian Jura at the border of the Doubs river. Approximately 300 pieces were growing on the slumping grass. Because this flower is on the red list it is strictly protected and the nature reserve was established just for its protection. Grounds, Rare Flowers

Snowdrop (Galanthus) | On one hand it's kind of diapointing that the snowdrops can only be found in the gardens in the city center where I live. Out in the nature reserve I haven't found any so far. On the other hand it is a good sign that the gardens around the city mansions are like a colorful carpet at the end of winter time, shining white of snowdrops and in the bright colors of the Crocus.None Gardens, Garden

Spring Snowflakes (leucojum vernum) are often mistaken for Snowdrops. These two kinds are really very similar which is why their names are very close as well. However, they are the first messengers of the approaching spring and very photogenic. Snowflakes

Broken fog | The weather situation on top of Hoher Kasten, a famous mountain in the Swiss Alpstein, was exceptional on that morning between two days of rather bad weather. The view was often blocked by the fog but inbetween there were nice opportunities for pictures, for example this view through the fog that allows to see lower lying rocks. Fine Art Photography

I had wanted to see praying mantis for a long time. Unfortunately there are none of these creatures nearby my home. So I was hoping to see some on a journey to Italy. I had almost given up the hope when I suddenly found a European dwarf mantis (Ameles spallanzania) next to a trail along the beach. It was sitting on a bush, obviously waiting for prey. As there were many butterflies and dragonflies flying around in that area there was enough potential food. Butterflies, Dwarf, Prey

Autumn weather along the Aare river. The water flows quietly while the first birds start their singing. Before sunrise such photos can be taken no need for filters. But I needed fishermen boots because the position from where I took this picture was in the middle of the Suhre stream that flows into the Aare at this location. Water Flow

Frozen Dragonfly | It was many early mornings that I was searching for a dragonfly in rigor due to low temperature. Finally I had a happy morning with lots of fog and temperatures not really rising for a long time. It never appeared to notice me. So I was able to take a big number of pictures I was dreaming of and could expose the animal against a nice background.

The Edelweiss (Leontopodium nivale) is a symbolic plant for Switzerland. The rare species is used by many companies in their logo design and also the Swiss tourism organization uses it. That is one reason why this plant appeals to many people, another is the fact that it is difficult to find as a plant living in high mountain areas of the Alps. It was some years ago when I discovered a place where they can be found in big numbers. So I had been planning to return there for some shots. Design, Plant, Naturaleza

After a long break I spent some time on landscape photography. I went to Linn (where the largest basswood of Switzerland can be found) and hiked up the hill to a rock in the Jurassic mountains from where the view in western direction is excellent - especially for sunsets. There is always a large risk to go home with no pictures at all, but we were lucky and the sky opend just as much as needed for the sunset. Happily we returned home.
