Prometheus and Saturn's rings

Prometheus and the Ghostly F Ring

The thin sliver of Saturn's moon Prometheus lurks near ghostly structures in Saturn's narrow F ring in this view from NASA's Cassini spacecraft. Many of the narrow ring's faint and wispy features result from its gravitational interactions with Prometheus.

Countless galaxies vie for attention in this monster image of the Fornax Galaxy Cluster, some appearing only as pinpricks of light while others dominate the foreground. One of these is the lenticular galaxy NGC 1316. The turbulent past of this much-studied galaxy has left it with a delicate structure of loops, arcs and rings that astronomers have now imaged in greater detail than ever before with the VLT Survey Telescope. This astonishingly deep image also reveals a myriad of dim objects…

The lure of the rings

AM a ring galaxy measuring light-years in diameter, making it larger than our entire Milky Way galaxy. It lies 300 million light-years away in the direction of the southern constellation Dorado.

Although the rings lack the many colors of the rainbow, they arc across the sky of Saturn.

Ring-Bow

Not a rainbow…but a ring-bow. Although the rings lack the many colors of the rainbow, they arc across the sky of Saturn.
