Qing dynasty summer Court hat. It shows a Chinese hat box that had been given to Captain Elliot as a gift from the Emperor. Interestingly, this artefact ended up in New Orleans when Captain Elliot was later posted there.
I picked up two antique Chinese hat boxes in the countryside a while back. Made from the thin bamboo, these ones are from Northern China. Its very hard to find real ones these days which haven't been repainted in horrible garish designs. The minute this occurs, they loose all the beauty of the subtle old style original paintings.
