3rd Grade Grapevine: Multiplication Fluency Test FREEBIE
Like me, I am sure many of you are already planning for the beginning of the next school year. Learning the basic multiplication facts takes time for many students, so I start this process in August/September. I have my students begin learning their facts using flash cards. Many purchase these, but they are easy to make with index cards as well. This year, in my classroom, we will be concentrating on the new Common Core standards of developing the concept of multiplication and number sense. However, in addition, at home I will have my students practice learning their basic facts as part of their daily homework assignments. PROBLEM: In past years, I found it a bit difficult to keep all of my students on the same set of facts at the same time. There are always some students that learn their facts very quickly and some need a bit more time. However keeping track of individual levels and testing those can be challenging. SOLUTION: I have found a solution that works for me and I hope it will work for you too. Each student has an individual assessment sheet. Each week I assess their mastery of a fact set. If they show mastery, they move on to the next set (assess next week). If not, then they practice that same set for another week, and test on that same set a second time. Since these assessments are all on one sheet, it is easy to keep up with what was tested on last time, without any additional recording of data. Once 8 assessments are completed, a new sheet is required, so I staple both together. I keep the class set of assessments in one folder, and they are easy to pass out each Friday. In addition to giving weekly assessments, I communicate student progress with parents weekly as well, with “Oops! notes” and “Congratulations! notes”. These assessments as well as parent communication notes are included in my Multiplication Fluency Assessment Pack. I have decided to offer if here for FREE. I hope this will help you keep organized and keep your kiddos on track as they learn their multiplication facts. Feel free to come and visit my blog or Facebook fan page for more freebies, teaching tips and more. Blog: www.3rdgradegrapevine.blogspot.com FB page: www.facebook.com/MrsHardinsclass.com
I am so excited to announce that I have just made my first QR code product!!! QR Codes: Area and Perimeter Task Cards If you have a QR Reader on your phone or tablet, you can even scan the QR Code on in the image above and it will give you the answer to the two task cards on the front cover. As I've posted earlier, beginning this Wednesday, our school will pilot our BYOD (Bring Your Own Device) program, as we continue to bring technology into the classroom. My daughter cannot wait to bring her iPod Touch into her classroom. My students are so excited to begin this program, so I wanted to make something fun for them to use. These QR code task cards have the same problems on them as my earlier two products, so you'll be able to use them with the board game if you choose. You might want to shrink them a bit, but try the QR code to see if it will work for you at that size. Optimal size for QR codes is 1in x 1 in, so anything much smaller might not be detected correctly. If you do not have a QR code reader, I can tell you that I searched the App Store on my iPhone, and downloaded Scan Lite for free. It is very dependable and super easy to use. I just click on the app, and when it comes up, it is in the scan mode already. I just point it in the direction of the QR code, so that it appears in the window on my phone. Its that easy. Be one of the first teachers to begin using QR codes on your grade level. They'll all think you are on the "cutting edge of technology!" Ha! Ha! If you grab a set of these for your kiddos, I would love to know how they worked for you. Just put your comments in the section below. I usually respond fairly promptly. Here is a FREEBIE just for you. We are in full swing trying to get our students to learn there multiplication facts. I can't do without these fluency assessments. We assess every Friday (if possible). I'd love to know how these assessments work for you. FREEBIE: Multiplication Fluency Assessments Here is a copy of the assessment form I use.

For kids who are easily distracted or overwhelmed by amount of work. Put assignments/responsibilities onto a paper in a file folder. Cut the file folder into thirds so that the student sees 23 tasks at one time. This is helpful for multistep problems and organizational difficulties as well as difficulties with attention.
Tips to help students who have trouble finishing their work. Some of the best ideas are so simple! Great for kids with special needs...
Cut a file folder into strips. Students open 1 flap at a time beginning at top and working way down. This breaks the assignment into "bitesized pieces" and helps students who have trouble getting started or feel overwhelmed.
For kids who are easily distracted or overwhelmed by amount of work. Cut a file folder into strips. The shorter the attention span, the smaller you will cut the strips. I cut this one into 3 parts. Students open 1 flap at a time and always begin at the top and work their way down. Students complete the work that they can see when a flap is open. This will be great as a visual scanning aid!
For kids who are easily distracted or overwhelmed by the amount of work, use a cut up file folder!
Behavior Management For kids who are easily distracted or overwhelmed by amount of work.
A few weeks ago, I shared a lesson from my friend, Sandy called, N.O.W. (News of the Week). Click HERE to read more about that lesson. (click on picture) One of the problems with this lesson is it can be overwhelming for students who either aren't on grade level or students who have trouble with focusing. So, the lesson was modified. (click on picture) One way to help students focus better, is to make this flap book: Cut a file folder into strips. The shorter the attention span, the smaller you will cut the strips. I cut this one into 3 parts. Students open 1 flap at a time and always begin at the top and work their way down. Students complete the work that they can see when a flap is open. Close the flap and then open the next flap until they finish the assignment. This makes the assignment in "bite size pieces". Use this strategy with students who have trouble getting started on an assignment. With those students they are overwhelmed with all of the words and graphics on the page. They don't feel like they will ever finish the assignment so why even begin. If they need extra motivation and a chance to move, you can set up a stamp station near your desk. Each time they complete the work in a flap area, they show you the work, and then go to the stamp station to get a stamp. Some students need as many of their five senses as possible incorporated into lessons. One way to do this is assigning the student a few problems at time. Circle the even number problem. When the students finishes with those problem, he/she will show them to you. Then you will circle the odd number problems. The student is getting up moving more which helps. You can add seasonal fun and a sensory touch to this if you use scented markers to circle the problems. In February, circle the numbers with red and pink. In December, use red and green to add a Christmas touch. Do you have any ideas?

This summer I have been studying the Second Grade Common Core Math Standards. I found some great resources on the internet that I wanted to share with you. The first one is from North Carolina Public Schools. It has the math standards unpacked. I am sure your district also has them, but here is a great reference if you misplaced your copy. I always like a copy on my computer because it is so much easier to find. I like the word problems below because it gives you examples for kindergarten, first grade, and second grade. Click on the picture of the addition and subtraction word problems for your copy. Here is another great resource that I found on Pinterest. Click on the picture of Math Story Problem Types for a copy. Do you have any great resources that you would like to share?

Comprehension Strategies: Reading Equals Thinking I am sharing seven common comprehensions strategies below. But please note that even though I list them separately, we actually integrate them when we read. As adults, we use multiple strategies without even knowing it many times. But for young and inexperienced readers, we need to model them explicitly so that they can eventually apply them as they read independently.
