My mother in law always did this, I though it was the chemicals in the peel that made it work so well. Just flatten a banana peel and bury it under one inch of soil at the base of a rosebush. The peel’s potassium feeds the plant and helps it resist disease...works for tomato plants too.

How to root hydrangea cuttings.... as if I have a green thumb :)
Rooting hydrangea cuttings - Locate a stem of softwood and cut a shoot that has several leaves. Trim it into 5-inch-long pieces that each have a leaf toward the top. Remove extra leaves; then cuts the remaining leaf in half to minimize evaporation (and the need for watering). Dip the other end in powdered rooting hormone; plant the cuttings in trays filled with a soilless mix and perlite. Cover with a plastic bag, and stash in a shady location, misting regularly to keep the leaf hydrated.

How to Use Coffee Grounds in Your Garden... I already save them for a body scrub, so here are more ideas.
Coffee Grounds as a Fertilizer: If you are looking to add a garden bed, build up an existing one, or just repair a section of the garden, coffee grounds can used in all these cases. All that needs to be done is for the coffee grounds to be mixed in with soil, at a ratio of 50/50, and it is then ready to be added to the garden. A good soaking in is required after this, and then leave the whole thing to settle in for a few days before adding plants or seed to the new soil.

weed-smothering ground covers: 'Walker's Low' catmint (Nepeta x faassenii 'Walker's Low', zones 4 to 8). Brushing its foliage releases a lovely bouquet into the air, and it blooms lavender early to midsummer. I shear mine back a bit with a hedge trimmer after it blooms for a new flush of foliage and flower. This cool cat thrives in sun and lean, dry soil, and you'll be surprised at how far one small clump will stretch. It divides easily in spring if you find you'd like to help it along.
Garden plants that help choke out weeds!
'Walker's Low' catmint (Nepeta x faassenii 'Walker's Low', zones 4 to 8). A weed-smothering ground cover. Sweetly scented foliage and clear lavender flowers are trademarks, and it thrives in lean soil and sun. This "cat" grows to about 3 feet high and wide, and it's wise to give it that much space to spread out, because it may shade out other, less competitive plants.

winter urns for front porch idea
Refined Evergreens are a staple in winter pots, but here, their bushy habit is blended with tall branches and earthy tones. Jim started with a ring of cedar and pine around the edge of the container, then pushed the birch logs into the centre to create a focal point. Magnolia, seeded eucalyptus, mentola balls and Italian cotoneaster fill in any gaps. “It’s like flower arranging, painting and art all mixed together,” he says.
