Love this book - Molokai, by Alan Brennert, all about a little Hawaiian girl in a leper colony in Moloka'i in 1891. Gorgeous descriptive prose gives you a feel for Hawaii back when it was an island nation. This beautiful book totally touched my heart, was sad in some places, taught me a bit about Hawaii, and surprisingly, made me laugh in a couple of spots. Good book. ~~ Houston Foodlovers Book Club
One of my favorite books ever. I have recommended the book to many people and no one has ever been disappointed. This is the story of a seven-year-old girl, Rachel Kalama, who contracts Hansen's Disease (aka: Leprosy) and is quarantined to live at Kalaupapa, the leper settlement, on the Island of Molokai. This story follows Rachel over ~70 years of her life. It should be made into a mini series! Unforgettable!
