Beginner's Guide to Essential Oils! Not sure where to start? This is everything you need to know about HOW to use your oils. — Family Health Spot
So, you've got yourself a few oils or maybe even signed up for an awesome starter kit and you're wondering, now what?? I totally get it, I've been there! In this post I'm going to cover the basics of essential oil usage to get you started. I'm not going to get into the science of essential oils, how exactly they work or the history of where the came from, how they're made etc. I'll cover those topics in future posts. This post is strictly HOW to use them. How to use essential oils. There are 3 methods of use with essential oils. 1. Aromatic - this means to inhale the oils. You can inhale directly from the bottle, or you can put a couple drops in your palms then cup your hands over your face and inhale (any time I have leftover oils on my hands I will use the cupping method so I can make sure I’m getting all the benefits), or you can use a diffuser. I really like the diffuser because that way everyone in the room gets the benefit of the oils. I will often diffuse citrus oils in the morning to get everyone in a perky happy mood, or calming oils like Lavender in the afternoons and evenings to help us all wind down and relax. I also love diffusing Thieves when the kids come home from school to eliminate any germs they bring in with them. 2. Topical - this means to apply the oils directly to the skin. Most of the time with topical use you will want to dilute your essential oil (more info on that in the next section). As far as how and where to apply your oils, this will vary depending on which oil you’re using (if it's mild and gentle or strong with potential to irritate) and what you are focused on. Generally when you have an ailment you will apply your oil on that location. For example if you have a headache you would apply to your temples & forehead, stomach ache or digestive issue you apply to the abdomen, respiratory issues you apply to the chest, and so on. For other things like mood and sleep you can apply to pulse points (wrists and neck), up the spine (lots of nerve endings there), forearms, or bottoms of the feet. The soles of your feet have the largest pores on the body so they absorb the oils very well. You never want to put essential oils in your eyes or ears! If you do get some in by accident flush with carrier oil. Another way to apply oils is on the Vita Flex points. (see images below) 3. Internal - this means to ingest the oils. Just like how not all plants are safe for human consumption, not all essential oils should be consumed either. Personally I only use Young Living essential oils because this is where they differ from other brands. Because of their high quality, many Young Living oils are safe to consume. Other brands of oils are NOT safe to consume and usually say so right on the bottle. Young Living essential oils are guaranteed for purity and potency, and all oils that can be ingested are clearly labeled as supplements and are certified GRAS (generally regarded as safe) by the FDA. Each oil has specifications and safety info printed right on the label. I prefer to drop mine in a glass of water or put them in an empty capsule. You can also drop them on a spoonful of raw honey, or on a slice of bread. Internal use of EOs with children should be done with caution, if at all, because they are so potent. I'm going to save a lot of the safety info, especially with kids, for another post so for now just do your research and do what YOU are comfortable with. Aside from those 3 main uses, EOs can also be used to make cleaning products, homemade lotions, lip balm, sunscreen, bug spray, bath salts, etc. Have fun with them! Experiment with different uses and application methods, that's the absolute BEST way to learn! Carrier Oils and dilution. Most of the time with topical and internal use you'll want to dilute your essential oils with a carrier oil. A carrier oil is any fatty vegetable based oil such as olive, coconut, grapeseed avocado, sweet almond, jojoba, argan, etc. You will want to dilute certain oils, which are called “hot” oils, because they can irritate the skin. Oils like Cinnamon, Peppermint, and Oregano are examples of hot oils. Essential oils are very powerful and potent so a little bit goes a long way. Another reason you would dilute your oils is to allow them to cover a larger surface area. Keep in mind that you almost always want to dilute oils with children, usually more so than you would on yourself. Hot oils should be diluted with internal use just like with topical application or they can cause upset stomach or irritation. Vita Flex Points. As I mentioned above, another great way to apply you essential oils is on the Vita Flex points. Vita Flex points are places on hands, feet, spine and ears that relate to organ systems and activate their reflex. This is called Reflexology. These are the same electrical pathways in the body that acupressure and acupuncture work with. Examples. Now that we've covered HOW to use the oils, let's go through a few examples of what I use my oils for and how specifically I apply them. * If I have a headache I'll dilute some Peppermint, Basil and Copaiba (great for inflammation) and apply to my temples, forehead, behind my ears, and the back of my neck. Sometimes if I have a tension headache I'll apply some Valor to the back of my neck as well. * If I have heartburn I'll rub some diluted Peppermint and Lemon or Peppermint, Lemongrass, and Ginger, or Di-Gize over my esophagus and breastbone. These oils are also great for digestive issues so I will apply them to my stomach or lower abdomen if I'm having other digestive upsets. If I need an extra boost or don't want to smell the oils, or sometimes as a preventative when I'm eating something I know won't agree (ahem, onions) then I'll put a few drops of Di-Gize in a capsule along with some olive oil and take that with my meal. * If my kids are going wild I will diffuse some Peace & Calming and Lavender or Stress Away (my favorite!) and rub some calming oils like those on their feet as well. These things are all good for unwinding after a long day and go great in a nice warm bath too! * If I feel like I may be coming down with something or hear those telltale coughs or sniffles in my kids I rub diluted Thieves and Oregano on the soles of our feet a couple times a day. I will also diffuse Thieves and rub Lemon on our lymph nodes to encourage drainage. * I like to apply Valor to my wrists and pulse points on my neck to ensure a good night's sleep. Other good ones we like for sleep are Tranquil, which comes in a roll on ( I apply up the spine), Cedarwood and Lavender, and Peace and Calming. Great to diffuse or apply to vita flex points. * When my seasonal allergies flare up I run to my Lavender, Lemon, and Peppermint mix. You can read more on my experience with that here. I love you to the moon and back. Art for kids. Children's room art.
this quote is from Taylor Swift's song 'Ronan' 😢😢💞💞💞
Just to remind me that even when someone told me this, he didn't mean it, and if he did then it sure didn't last long. One night he told me," I love you to the moon and back, baby girl" and a couple mornings later, apperently we were too different and thinks werent "working out" :'( boys never know what they're talking about. They just say stuff because they think it'd be cute... what they don't realize is that when that say that kind of stuff, girls believe them...
