Brain Pickings offers a valuable list of books worth reading for writers and would be writers.
Bird by Bird: Some Instructions on Writing and Life by Anne Lamott. This one is for writers... laugh out loud with Lamott as she shares her feelings and expertise on writing.
"Oh my God, what if you wake up some day, and you're 65, or 75, and you never got your memoir or novel written; or you didn't go swimming in warm pools and oceans all those years because your thighs were jiggly and you had a nice big comfortable tummy; or you were just so strung out on perfectionism and people-pleasing that you forgot to have a big juicy creative life, of imagination and radical silliness and staring off into space like when you were a kid? Don't let this happen." #AnneLamott
Bird by Bird by Anne Lamott | 5 Great Books on the Craft of Writing. "Perfectionism is the voice of the oppressor…It will keep you cramped and insane your whole life, and it is the main obstacle between you and a shitty first draft."

Where'd You Go, Bernadette...“a shrewd yet compassionate portrait of family dysfunction and the volatility of genius in laugh-out-loud, irresistibly high-spirited prose...acid-tongued humor, deftly calculated timing, on-point dialogue, and a deeply self-assured knack for nailing the wacky and eccentric, takes readers on an original and movingly imaginative adventure.” - - Seattle Times

Highly recommend this book: "Where'd You Go, Bernadette" and for those who like audio books.. this is a hoot to listen to! Maria Semple is the author.
I love author Maria Semple's funky marketing idea of dressing up an American girl doll like her main character in her book, "Where'd You Go Bernadette." The book is about an architect who has stopped working and has become a "menace" in her new life without her artistic medium.
Where'd You Go Bernadette by Maria Semple. Very accurate doll!
Guess I need to read it before the movie comes out...

Cloud Atlas: A Novel David Mitchell One of my Favorite Books
Cloud Atlas : A Novel by David Mitchell. Book has six separate stories that intertwine and impact the others. Movie due out in December with Tom Hanks, Halle Berry and others.
Cloud Atlas, such a great book. worth a read before the movie comes out!
Cloud Atlas by David Mitchell- Six related stories that span thousands of years. The writer offers a journal of a nineteenth-century traveler, letters from an early twentieth-century composer, the adventures of a mid-1970s journalist, the more comic adventures of a contemporary small publisher, the ordeal of a clone in a corporate-driven future, and a post-apocalyptic tale in the far distant future. Definitely worth reading, even if you have seen the film. Recommended by Dr. Mike George.
Cloud Atlas. Saw the movie trailer, and I think the book would be excellent, regardless of how trippy the movie looks! It's on my "To Read" list.

'The Receptionist: An Education at The New Yorker' by Janet Groth: In 1957, when a young Midwestern woman landed a job at The New Yorker, she didn’t expect to stay long at the reception desk. But for twenty-one years she had the best seat in the house. In addition to taking messages, she ran interference for jealous wives checking on adulterous husbands, drank with famous writers at watering holes throughout bohemian Greenwich Village, and was seduced by a few of the magazine’s luminaries.
The Receptionist: An Education at The New Yorker, Janet Groth's account of her two decades at the magazine, starting at age 19, the daily inner workings and her relationships with many notable contributors.

Canada by Richard Ford. After his parents are arrested and imprisoned for robbing a bank, 15-year-old Dell Parsons is taken in by Arthur Remlinger who, unbeknownst to Dell, is hiding a dark and violent nature that interferes with Dell's quest to find grace and peace on the prairie of Saskatchewan. Invitation to a Beheading - The New Yorker
"Winn Van Meter and his wife, Biddy, are preparing to give their daughter away in marriage, but their well-organized lives are tipped off-kilter by misbehaving family, neighbors and wedding party members. It's nothing major, but just enough to make everyone question what they think they know about their lives, their society, their upbringing and their sense of self."
