New pound coin designed to be in circulation in 2017. Billed by The Royal Mint as the 'most secure in the world'. The move comes amid concerns about the 30 year old coin's vulnerability to counterfeiting with an estimated 45 million forgeries in circulation. The new coin is based on the design of the old threepenny bit, a twelve sided coin in circulation between 1937 and 1971

Pre-decimal coinage. Just prior to decimalisation in 1971, the circulating British coins were the half crown, two shillings or florin, shilling, sixpence, threepence, penny and halfpenny. The farthing had been withdrawn in 1960. There was also the Crown, which was (and still is) legal tender but only minted on special occasions and not normally circulated.
