von Karman Vortices, South Pacific
from NASA's Earth Observatory: Each of these swirling clouds is the result of a meteorological phenomenon known as a von Karman vortex. These vortices appeared over Alexander Selkirk Island in the southern Pacific Ocean. Rising precipitously from the surrounding waters, the island’s highest point is nearly a mile (1.6 km) above sea level. As wind-driven clouds encounter this obstacle, they flow around it to form large, spinning eddies.

Von Karman cloud vortices above Alexander Selkirk Island, Chile. These clouds look like they have had a hole punched through them. In fact they are naturally occurring vortices crafted by wind patterns on the clouds. In this image these cloud vortices (swirls down left) have been caused by the peak of Alexander Selkirk Island (bottom left) disrupting wind-blown clouds. This image was captured by the Enhanced Thematic Mapper Plus (ETM ) sensor on NASA's Landsat 7 satellite.

Water Spout in Italy "I always felt like these were straight-up tornadoes. People like to say, “oh, it’s just a water spout, no big deal”. Really, it looks pretty scary to me. A water spout is what you use to fill up your mop bucket." (Photo was taken on August 18, 2008 in Zoagli, Liguria, ITALY). - photo via Milky way scientists on fb

Lightning strikes the Statue of Liberty in New York on Sept. 22,2012. Photographer Jay Fine spent two hours in Battery Park City, Manhattan, trying to get the perfect picture. He shot 80 photos before capturing this image just before 9 p.m. local time.
This is the moment when a lightning bolt appears to strike the Statue of Liberty in New York. New York photographer Jay Fine had spent the night braving the storm in Battery Park City, Manhattan in a bid to get the perfect picture. Jay spent nearly two hours poised with his camera and took more than 80 shots before luck struck with this particular bolt of lightning at 8.45pm on September 22, 2010. He said that he had been waiting 40 years to get the picture. (Source)
