To close up Shark Week, I’m leaving you with this infographic. Sharks have been on the Earth for 450 million years, and now their numbers are decreasing at an alarming rate. Sharks typically breed when they are older, have long gestation times, and only give birth a couple of times in their life. They aren’t able to replace themselves nearly as quickly as they would need to in order to recover their numbers.
Man Bites Shark. The shark is the most feared animal on the planet. Sharks killed 12 people last year (a peak year), we kill that many every 4 seconds. 100 million sharks are killed annually. Most of the slaughter is from finning, a cruel & wasteful practice in which hunters slice off the living shark’s fin(s), causing the fish to drown or be eaten by predators. The fins are sold for shark fin soup. by Joe Chernov, VP of Marketing @ Kinvey & Robin Richards, the head of design firm ripetungi

the one graph yo NEED TO SEE. The single thing you should look at to understand the debt clock and what it is — or isn’t — telling you is this graph from the Center on Budget and Policy Priorities. It does something very simple. It takes public debt since 2001 — which is when we last saw surpluses — and breaks it into its component parts.

Two of the biggest stars of the Republican National Convention are the clocks in the convention hall counting the national debt — which they've pinned on President Obama. But what they aren't saying is that that some of the most sacred Republican priorities, including war spending and tax cuts for the rich, are responsible for the majority of that growing debt. Nearly every bill signed by the president has included offsets to make the spending deficit neutral. Why? Because it’s been the law of the land ever since President Obama signed the Statutory Pay-As-You-Go Act in February 2010, which mandates that new spending be offset with spending cuts or new revenue. Yes, a Democratic president and a Democratic Congress passed this legislation. Guess how many congressional Republicans voted for the law. Zero. Not one.

ECONOMY America's Class War Explained in 1 Chart Growth of Real Hourly Compensation for Production/Nonsupervisory Workers and Productivity, 1948–2011 The system has been effectively restructured to serve the needs of the ruling elites.
While productivity growth has been relatively consistent through the post-war period, productivity became unchained from wages in the early 1970s.
This divergence of pay and productivity has meant that many workers were not benefitting from productivity growth—the economy could afford higher pay but it was not providing it.
“The first truth is that the liberty of a democracy is not safe if the people tolerate the growth of private power to a point where it becomes stronger than their democratic state itself. But beyond that, check out the UK line. The UK was recovering on a fine trajectory right up until early 2010, at which point UK growth hit a brick wall. What happened in 2010? Since the Supreme Court is hearing oral arguments this week on the Affordable Care Act (a.k.a. Obamacare), its worth pointing out what the law would actually do. Heres one example, from the Washington State-based progressive group Fuse Washington, on the difference between health insurance prices for women and men pre- and post-ACA:
Higher health care premiums for women broken down by state. Pre and post Affordable Care Act. Looks like the Insurance Companies are losing a bit of their "profit" and women are not getting shafted anymore.
Insurance companies in many states charge women more for health insurance than they do men. But come 2014, that all changes thanks to President Obama's Affordable Care Act.
Women pay more money than men for health insurance in a majority of states. This is flat out wrong! #healthcare #obamacare #affordablecareact
It's NOT healthcare reform, it's simply leveling the playing field with the insurance industry. No changes to the practice of healthcare except for those related to the payment of received care by insurance companies. i.e. if your insurance company refuses to pay for your care, your doctor may have no choice but try a different, "approved" and therefore reimbursable method of caring for your needs. Insurance companies are the true devils in this game.

MY LIFE WAS SAVED WITH THE CANCER SCREENING AND PREVENTION. ONLY 3% OF PLANNED PARENTHOOD SERVICES ARE ABORTIONS. FactCheck.org : Planned Parenthood
Only 3% of their patient care actually goes to abortion services. And, according to federal law, Planned Parenthood cannot actually use government funds on abortion procedures. So, if Planned Parenthood gets defunded, it’ll hurt poor people who are in need of cancer screenings, contraception, and STD testing
Indiana's GOP-led state legislature was one of the first to declare war against Planned Parenthood in 2011, when it passed a bill that defunded the family planning provider because some of its clinics offer abortion services. All five clinics that were forced to close had offered HIV testing. None had offered abortions.
As you can see in the chart, abortion services account for about 3% of #Planned_Parenthood’s activities. cancer screening & prevention (16%), STD testing for both men & women (35%), & contraception (35%). About 80% of users are over age 20, and 75% have incomes below 150& of the poverty line. It’s also worth noting that federal law already forbids Planned Parenthood from using the funds it receives from the government for abortions.
