Artist Richard C Plaza's take on some original illustrations from 1888 newspapers and magazines - some available only in small size or in poor condition and here revamped for my upcoming novel. With apologies to Tenniel fans..

In the early hours of Friday, 31 August, a Pickford's carman saw a body lying on the pavement of Buck's Row, Whitechapel. In the gloom he did not see the ferocious gashes that had nearly severed her head from her body. He went on his way, looking out for a constable. Meanwhile a policeman on his beat discovered the body and raised the alarm. She was Jack the Ripper's first (canonical) victim - Mary (Polly) Nichols, 43. Pavement, The Row, Whale, Novels, Batman, Mary, Friday, Illustrations, Superhero
