NOT Cute
The Internet is fill of cute images of pets, and of pets and children together. But many of these images are NOT cute -- they're potentially dangerous situations for the child, or demonstrate behavior that's unkind to animals. No, I'm not trying to be a party-pooper. I'm trying to keep all our kids and pets safe, and build positive animal-child relationships for the future.

The Four-Legged Scandal No One Is Talking About
I feel very strongly about this issue. It's an insult to people with disabilities and their trained service dogs when businesses or individuals participate in frauds this way. And it makes access and independence harder for individuals who rely on their trained service dogs. Shame!
YouTube
Here a child is pestering a dog that understandably is fearful in the situation, especially with paws being touched. The dog shows warning signals, but then has to go in for a very inhibited bite. And then look at the "joke" title of "Dog attack," and the "they are just playing" in the video description. This is not just about this dog and this child, but all the other people who view this video thinking it's funny or "cute." It's neither.
Dog Kisses Laughing Baby
This one fills me with anxiety. The dog clearly is a tolerant dog, but he was exibiting behavior that showed he was anxious. While dogs do learn to kiss/lick as a sign of affection, it's also a sign of anxiety and appeasement. So is panting, which we saw when this baby started to climb on the dog's hindquarters. And as I often point out, other dogs may well not be so tolerant, especially those not used to kids, or with arthritis. This is not safe and shouldn't be passed around as "cute."

A friend told me about a situation in Aruba, where there is a garbage bin that her friend, Kim, has discovered where the locals dispose of puppies that are then euthanized by the government. It's horrible. She's already managed to get some of them sent to Canada and adopted, but she can't do more without support. Can you spread the word and help raise money to save these little lives?
