Italian (Milan) steel breastplate, c1545. Formerly part of a parade armor, this is the only signed work of Giovanni Paolo Negroli, a cousin of the more famous Filippo Negroli. Now bright, the breast plate's surface probably was originally russet-colored and the raised and etched areas were gilded. (Metropolitan Museum of Art)
