Johan Joseph Zoffany (Frankfurt 1733-London 1810) - George III (1738-1820), Queen Charlotte (1744-1818) and their Six Eldest Children

This painting (unlike Zoffany’s earlier interior portraits of royal children) was evidently conceived as a public conversation piece, immediately engraved by Richard Earlom (1743-1822), published 29 October 1770, and exhibited at the Royal Academy. This seems to be the type of image Hogarth was planning for his unsuccessful group portrait of the family of George II (Royal Collection); as in that case Zoffany chose (or was required) to provide an oil sketch for the composition which is also…

This portrait was originally painted in 1734 for Philip Yorke, 1st Earl of Hardwicke (1690-1764) and celebrates the sitters marriage in that year to William IV, Prince of Orange (1711-51). Amigoni was a Neapolitan painter who had worked in Venice and Bavaria before spending a decade (1730-9) in London; this portrait is characteristic of his glossy, decorative and fanciful type of portrait. Thomas Gainsborough (1727-88) - The Three Eldest Princesses: Charlotte, Princess Royal (1766-1828), Augusta (1768-1840) and Elizabeth (1770-1840)

George IVs commission to depict his three eldest sisters in a full length group at a cost of 300 guineas must have seemed a magnificent opportunity to Gainsborough. In the event the paintings fortune did not prove altogether happy. The first argument it caused was with the hanging committee of the Royal Academy of 1784 who (quite reasonably for a full-length) decided to hang it above the line (the line being a division at about eye-level between cabinet paintings, hung below, and large…

‘Elizabeth, Countess of Kildare’, Sir Peter Lely, c.1679 | Tate

Artwork page for ‘Elizabeth, Countess of Kildare’, Sir Peter Lely, c.1679 on display at Tate Britain. Elizabeth Jones, eldest daughter of the 1st Earl of Ranelagh, was one of the great beauties of the Restoration court. The orange blossom that she holds, and the cupids on the pot to the left, may refer to her readiness to marry. However, in the late 1670s, when it is thought this painting was made, she was rumoured to be mistress to Charles II. She was not to marry the Earl of Kildare until…
