Bela Lugosi as Jesus Christ, 1909
This is one of a series of photos that the young Bela Lugosi had taken of himself when he played Jesus in a passion play in the Easter of 1909, in his native Hungary. Original B&W photo.
“I am Jesus…I bid you welcome…” Whether Bela Lugosi said that, I dunno, but I do know that in 1909, the young Bela was cast as Jesus Christ in a production of the Easter passion play. And doesn’t he look good? With his robe, crown of thorns and flowing locks. The young Bela thought so too, and had several studio portrait photographs taken of himself as Jesus. Whether he invited audience members to drink his blood or eat his flesh is unknown. H/T Patheos, Completely Unproductive, Flick Filosopher

Gustave Doré’s Hauntingly Beautiful 1883 Illustrations for Edgar Allan Poe’s “The Raven” | Brain Pickings
Gustave Doré’s Splendid Illustrations of Edgar Allan Poe’s “The Raven” (1884): Doré enjoyed phenomenal monetary success as an illustrator in his life-time, but his desire to be acknowledged as a fine artist was never realized. Poe suffered the opposite fate—recognized as a great artist in his lifetime, he never achieved financial stability. Doré received the equivalent of $140,000 for his illustrated edition of “The Raven.” But Poe was only paid nine dollars for his most famous poem.
