Weaving Cute Baby Turtles Using God's Eye Weaving Pattern
Looking for some fun and unique summer crafts to do with the kiddos? Me too! School is almost over and I've got summer crafts on my mind! Today I'm sharing this fun twist on a God's Eye weaving craft. (Remember collecting sticks and making those in summer camp?) But, instead of making the traditional 2 stick version, we recently made a fun 3 stick version.... that also happens to look like a tiny baby turtle! (Aww, aren't they cute? My preschooler was in looove with these.) Weaving Cute Baby Turtles Using God's Eye Weaving Pattern This post contains affiliate links. Thank you for your support! For my full disclosure policy, click here. Usually I have a ton of related picture books to share.... but apparently we don't read very many turtle-themed books! (Know of any good ones?) The only ones that I can remember us reading (and liking) are the Franklin books. Ok. Let's get to weaving some baby turtles! Let's Weave Some Baby Turtles! First we painted 3 mini popsicle sticks with quick dry solid tempera paint. (I LOOOVE these paints because we can paint quickly and if the baby starts crying and we have to stop crafting... it's not a big deal. There's not much cleanup or setup needed!) Once our paint dried (ours dried in a couple of minutes) we drew on a face and some toes. Then, we hot glued the turtle together. Now we grabbed our colorful yarn and got weaving. First I tied on a piece of long yarn. (I made sure to leave a bit of excess yarn so that I could tie my last piece of yarn with my first piece of yarn at the end.) Then, we wrapped the yarn around our turtle (across the center), making sure to cover the middle portion. (I think I wrapped it around 2-3 times each time.) Ok. Then, we began weaving just like you would with a normal two stick God's eye pattern. We placed our yarn over a popsicle stick, wrapped it around once, and then placed our yarn over the next popsicle stick, and wrapped it around... and kept repeating that over and around process. And to change colors, we simply tied on another piece of yarn. Once we finished, we tied our last piece of yarn to our first piece of yarn. And that's it! I really hope you try this activity with your kiddos too. It's such a fun and easy craft that's sure to please kids of all ages. (When my 4 year old saw me making these, he immediately wanted to make some too. I got the first steps started for him, but he quickly caught onto the "over and around" weaving pattern!) And if you liked this activity, you can find more weaving crafts and more popsicle stick crafts on the blog! Let's Keep in Contact! Check out my Pinterest, Facebook, or Instagram accounts for more creative ideas! Happy making, friends!

Father's Day Etched Grill Set
3 Cheers for all Super Hero Dads! I feel like I was given super natural skills to bring this to you ahead of schedule. The Super hero, "Dad," in our house has super hero skills that he shares with us while at the grill. I've heard rumours of many other such super heroes in our midst, too; which is why I'm so happy to share this project for the super hero in your life! Make Etched Gill Set this year for Father's Day. Everyone in the family collaborated and made a piece to add to the set which made such a great mix. Since each one of us created our piece using the etching on wood, the eclectic mix worked perfectly together. We tried out a super fun new technique that doesn't involved paint. Just click below to learn how to make these, too... To make these we used a wood etching or wood burning kit. I remember that my brother had one as a kid and realised that it could be a great way to captured the imagination of our active boys, too! It did. In fact, we all had a lot of fun creating. We embellished multiple cutting boards and grill utensils just for "Dad" and started by practicing on an old board to get the hang of the tool but, moved on to our ideas quickly. Are you ready to get started, too? Supplies: Wood etching kit, * soft pencil, eraser, wood cutting board and grill utensils * These are available at craft stores. In Sweden, we founds ours at, Clas Olsson, a hardware store in Sweden. If grill utensils are varnished, sand the varnish off with light sand paper before etching. If you would like to use a template to make the larger Super Dad Art, click here for template) To make: - Using a pencil, lightly draw your pattern on the wood surface. (Dad "burst" template here." To use the template, use a soft pencil to cover the back of the printed template, plate this side with pencil directly on to the wood surface and firmly trace the line of the drawing in other to transfer the pattern to the wood surface.) - Once the pattern has been drawn, trace the lines with the etching tool. - Once complete, it's ready for giving! I feel like I'm counting days until we get to give these to "Super Dad!" I'm so happy to share this idea with you, too. In addition to Father's Day, these can make great Summer Hostess Gifts, Teacher Gifts or Summer Camp Projects. I'd love to see what you do with this tutorial. Happy Making and Willowday Wishes! Make a personalised Tossing Game | willowday
Boys + balls. Kids + play. This is an easy way to make this happen, every day! This classic is also a family classic party game and if you follow me, below, I'll share how we personalised this game and will share ways we've learned to vary it and to play it with different groups, indoors and outdoors, and with a span of ages, throughout the years. Supplies: Recycled Containers, duct tape, ball*, (optional: rocks to hold the containers down and numerical stickers) To make: - Cut or remove tops from clean, recycled containers. (For our party, we wanted a set that had large range of size and used a kitchen paper roll, a canned tomato jar, a milk container, a yogurt container and a pail.) - Decorate containers - Play! To Play: - Indicate a place in which the players will stand on the ground, near the game. (Tape works well to mark this.) - Place Containers in desired positions. - Each player gets 3 balls, 3 tosses. - Have the player stand in the designated position, indicated by the tape, and have the player start tossing. Once a player has tossed 3 times, the next player steps up to play. - Add scores. - Player with highest score, wins. Notes: Numbering: We numbered each containers and kept track of scores. Smaller opening equalled high score, larger opening, made lower scores. The containers with smaller openings were also placed further away, giving balls that landed in these containers high scores. * Balls and Tossing: - We used a bouncy ball. - Ping Pong and Whiffle Balls work well for an older group due to the fact that they bounce very easily and make the game more difficult. - You may play by tossing the ball or by having it bounce once to bounce into the container. - If playing the game indoors, pompoms work well. - Nerf and sponge balls work great with larger containers and younger kids. - The container must remain standing for the points to count. Indoors | Outdoors - If playing the game outdoors, it may be good to fill the containers with rocks to hold this securely or to keep them from blowing over, in case of wind. - Outdoors, it can be fun to use very large containers and a larger ball. Swimming Pools, leaf Baskets and pails, like the one that we used here, work ideally. Have fun playing and, as always, I'd love to see how you use this tutorial! willowday: Dandelion Lions with printable template
Why hello there, dandies, lions and --- absolutely --- every one of you! I invite you to travel on a dandelion safari with us and then, invite these "Dandy Lions" back into your home. (I promise these lions don't bite and can be trusted not to roar at bedtime. ) Jump with me below for a step-by-step and template for you to get started! Supplies: Dandelion, Card Stock, Adhesive (glue or double-sided tape), Drawing tool, (we used pens). Scissor HOW TO: 1. Collect Dandelions 2. Cut body and tail from card stock. (see template below) 3. Draw Face and attach to dandelion. We used glue. 4. Attach dandelion to the tip of the tail, if desired, and attach tail. We cut a small slit in the area we wanted to attach the tail and slid the tail in place. For extra adherence, use double sided tape. 5. Use your imagination. TEMPLATE for Dandelion Body + Tail (PDF HERE) This past week, this humble weed stood out to me and made the reason so clear for starting this blog: the wish to spread simple beauty, imagination, and creativity. I'm thrilled to meet you here again and to be leaping back in today. One of my favorite things to do, with the kids, is to take walks -- we walk, we talk; we collect things that lead to ideas. In the past few weeks, I've been asked to share nature crafts several times and it's given me fuel for thought on this subject. We've tried many ideas but, these are a project that I just can't wait to get into your hands and to see what you do! With Spring positively bursting, I've been head over heels, bursting with Spring Flower Inspiration myself, since we last met. (I'm so terribly sorry that it's been so long but, I hope that you just peruse the blog for past projects, we have so much here!) Spring has actually lead to some new projects that I'm actually bursting-at-the-seams to share with you but, that's for another day. For us, Dandelion Lions, were a relaxed morning moment of creativity, but, I can really imagine these being made in rain or shine; infact, I would love to see this as a part of a summer animal party! I'd love to see what you do. Let's start a Dandelion Pride together. If you're inspired by this post, I love to hear from you + see what you do with it. If you share these on Instagram or Facebook, please use the hashtag #willowdayproject and tag meat willowdaygram or share with me on Wllowday's Facebook Page. What works best for you? Is there another method that you'd prefer? I do post regularly on Instagram (willowdaygram) and love meeting you there. If you're not on Instagram, I thought I'd share a few little snippets, below, of a few of my recent posts there. I'm so very happy to meet you again and wish you an inspired, imaginative, day!
