In the age of electronic information, it’s easy to forget that the great libraries of the past were overwhelming storehouses of information. This fascinating picture from the Cincinnati Public Library was taken in the 1870s in the “Main Hall.” Widely believed to be the most impressive public library in the country during the 19th century, it sported five tiers of alcoves for shelving, with narrow walkways between them. Sadly, the building was torn down in 1955.

LOST BEAUTY. Interior of the Public Library of Cincinnati & Hamilton County “Old Main” Building (1874). J.W. McLaughlin, Architect. Photographer unknown. PLCH began in 1802 as a subscription library. In 1853, it officially became the Cincinnati Public Library. In 1874, this building was constructed on Vine St between Sixth & Seventh St and was then considered the most magnificent public library building in the country. Site in use until 1955. I dream about places that look like this.
I would die. This is my heaven. And it's full of every single book I would be interested in reading.
This is a part of my personal heaven - look at all those books!! A man taking a book off the shelf in Cincinnati main library in 1874. Photo by: Public Library of Cincinnati and Hamilton County.
Cathedral of the book This unreal 19th-century image of Cincinnati Public Library stands out among the library images I tweeted and blogged about over the past year - readers of my project’s Wordpress blog may recognize it. The picture takes us into a large, dark room, with high ceilings. Light is sprinkled over high stacks of books, which look like matchboxes. Cast-iron pillars hold up the ceiling and give the place the appearance of a cathedral, where readers come to worship the ...

Want to blow a kids mind? Tell them that the research paper due next week has to be done using ONLY the library card catalogue and the Dewey Decimal System! NO COMPUTERS OR SEARCH ENGINE ALLOWED! Think they'd appreciate us "old farts" a little more then? In today's world, having to do a research paper the old school way is far worse than having "to walk to school, in the snow, up a hill both ways"!

Early-1971, in an effort to attract as many youngsters to the premises as possible, Marguerite Hart — children's librarian at the newly-opened public library in Troy, Michigan — wrote to a number of notable people with a request: to reply with a congratulatory letter, addressed to the children of Troy, in which the benefits of visiting such a library were explained in some form. The above is from Isaac Asimov.

Words of wisdom from Isaac Asimov
16 March 1971 Dear Boys and Girls, Congratulations on the new library, because it isn’t just a library. It is a space ship that will take you to the farthest reaches of the Universe, a time machine that will take you to the far past and the far future, a teacher that knows more than any human being, a friend that will amuse you and console you—-and most of all, a gateway, to a better and happier and more useful life. Isaac Asimov

Isaac Asimov (In 1971, just before the opening of Michigan’s first public library in Troy, librarian Marguerite Hart set out to inspire the city’s youngsters to read and love the library. So she dreamed up a letter-writing campaign inviting dozens of cultural luminaries — writers, actors, musicians, politicians, artists — to share what made reading special for them and speak to the importance of libraries. She got 97 letters in return, spanning 50 states and a multitude of occupations.)

watch people who work in bookstores, they fan the books close to their nose and inhale. library books smell better then new books. i think it's because of the loving hands rubbing the magic.
To this day, when my kids open a new book, they lean over and smell it, first thing. :)
Magic in the air! This is why I cannot get into reading books on a Kindle or Nook.
