An unlikely hero recently saved a Texas family from a group of armed robbers. Calamity Jane, a three-legged Golden Retriever, had already survived being shot herself. Perhaps that's why she sensed that something was wrong at her neighbors' house one night in late January. As the Koleman family was being held at gunpoint, Calamity Jane began barking urgently in the yard next door. The startled intruders fled - with the brave tripod at their heels.
Naki'o is the world's first dog to be fitted with a complete set of bionic paws. They work naturally to allow him to run, jump and play like any other dog. Naki'o lost his paws to frostbite as a puppy after he was abandoned in the Nebraska winter by his owners. He was adopted by vet technician Christie Tomlinson. As he grew, Naki'o had difficulty getting around on his stubs, resorting to crawling on his stomach. So last year Tomlinson decided to get him prosthetics. Click to view video.

Not the least among the heros of the Titanic was Rigel, a big black Newfoundland water rescue dog, belonging to the first officer, who went down with his ship. But for Rigel, the fourth boat picked up might have been run down by the Carpathia. For three hours he swam in the water where the Titanic went down, evidently looking for his master, and was instrumental in guiding the boatload of survivors to the gangway of the Carpathia
