Europe, c 1825 • Silk net with silk embroidery and silk satin trim • During the Romantic era, sleeves began to widen, waistlines dropped slightly, and skirts flared out at the hem. The fashionable hourglass silhouette was enhanced by details on the upper and lower areas of dresses. Here, the satin trim on the sleeves and the undulating tubular trim (rouleau) on the skirt emphasize volume, while the transparent fabric gives ghe impression of a delicate lightness.
