"7 Days of Garbage" // Environmental photography project by Gregg Segal
Photographer Gregg Segal's 7 Days of Garbage photo series. “7 Days of Garbage is a series of portraits of friends, neighbors, and other acquaintances with the garbage they accumulate in the course of a week. Subjects are photographed surrounded by their trash in a setting that is part nest, part archeological record. We’ve made our bed and in it we lie.”

This TED talk really spoke to me. It talks about how you cannot be a leader if you do not immerse yourself inside the social movement or problem that you are trying to improve. This made me think of Model the Way. How can you model the way without immersing yourself into the population you are trying to inspire? How can you inspire or leave a legacy without being a part of the population you serve?

I love this. I don't care what kind of belief system they have or don't have, I just want them to have thought their decision through.

[Los Angeles] Digital photographer Thierry Cohen, envisions what cities around the world would look like after dark and without artificial light in his series Villes éteintes ("Darkened Cities"). To create the images he travelled to regions far away from all artificial light, but on the same latitude as major cities. He photographed the skies, and then combined those images with photographs of the cities in question, altered to remove all lighting.

March Book 1 by John Lewis | first in the graphic novel trilogy about The Civil Rights Movement. "Many years ago, John Lewis and other student activists drew inspiration from the 1958 comic book "Martin Luther King and the Montgomery Story." Now, his own comics bring those days to life for a new audience, testifying to a movement whose echoes will be heard for generations." released Aug. 2013
(NF: Level 1, 2) This graphic novel is a first-hand account of Congressman John Lewis' lifelong struggle for civil and human rights, meditating in the modern age on the distance traveled since the days of Jim Crow and segregation. Rooted in Lewis' personal story, it also reflects on the highs and lows of the broader civil rights movement. "Cannot report on both this and Persepolis."
March: Book One by John Lewis, Andrew Aydin, and illustrated by Nate Powell. This graphic novel is dedicated to the life and Civil Rights work of Congressman John Lewis, and has received the 2014 Coretta Scott King Award. Book one begins with Lewis’ vivid description of his childhood in rural Alabama through his college years in Nashville, Tennessee. #March #JohnLewis #graphicnovel

Fukushima VICE Report will leave you speechless Dr. Masamichi Nishio, MD, who was examining children at elementary school 40 miles from Fukushima Daiichi: There has undoubtedly been radiation poisoning, so people should not be living here. But the government will not say that out loud. All they wanted to do was cover-up what had been done. There is a lot of secrecy. The photograph looks at once beautiful and disturbing: crystalline waters shimmer beside a rock-strewn beach. It takes a moment to realize those jade speckles aren't some extraordinary case of marine phosphorescence but rather hundreds of discarded plastic bottles, piled upon the rocks. ALGAS - We all know that pollution is a big problem, but artist Alejandro Durán has chosen to showcase it in a rather beautiful way. For Washed Up Durán collects trash that has made its way to the beaches of Sian Ka’an, Mexico’s largest federally-protected reserve. He then creates color-based, site-specific sculptures that mimic nature. Over the course of the project plastic waste from fifty nations on six continents has been identified. Tragic and impactful.
Ever wonder where that bottle goes when you toss it into the ocean? Washed Up is an ongoing project by Mexican-born, New York-based artist Alejandro Durán that addresses the issue of plastic pollution making its way across the ocean and onto the shores of Sian Ka’an, Mexico’s largest federally-protected reserve.
