Set in Japan, it narrates the search of 19-year-old Eiji Miyake for his father, whom he has never met. Told in the first person by Eiji, it is a coming of age/perception story that breaks convention by juxtaposing Eiji Miyake’s actual journey toward identity and understanding with his imaginative journey.

The story takes place mainly around East Asia, but also moves through Russia, Britain, the USA and Ireland. It is written episodically; each chapter details a different story and central character, although they are all interlinked through seemingly coincidental events. Many of the themes from Ghostwritten continue in Mitchell's subsequent novels, number9dream and Cloud Atlas.

50 Books To Read Before You Die
The novel consists of six nested stories that take the reader from the remote South Pacific in the nineteenth century to a distant, post-apocalyptic future. Each tale is revealed to be a story that is read (or observed) by the main character in the next.

Cloud Atlas — David Mitchell Perfectly enjoyable and reasonable book exploring slavery and exploitation, ascent and descent, over centuries and in its many forms.
Cloud Atlas - David Mitchell The film was already mental challenging, reading it yet will be another challenge.
Cloud Atlas - David Mitchell; 6 stories of very different people in very different times and places--1800s Pacific, 1930s Europe, 1970s USA, 21st century UK, 22nd century Korea and Hawaii in the distant future--are told together and show bit by bit how, unexpectedly, even though we may be forgotten, our choices do matter, and we are all somehow connected. Interesting plot(s) and unique style, sometimes funny, sometimes wise.

Abarat: Absolute Midnight by Clive Barker book review
Abarat series - book 3
"Sent out of paradise for their sins, the first couple stole fruits from every tree they passed on their way to the gate, so as to spite their creator. And outside the garden, crouched against the wall, they gorged upon the fruit, eating one after the other until their bodies sickened with the excess of it and they puked them up. And the seeds of the fruit were spilled in the dirt, and from them came the monsters of the world, who were born in filth and never knew there was such a thing as Love"

Title: The Glass Bead Game (Magister Ludi) Authors: Hermann Hesse
The Glass Bead Game by Hermann Hesse, 1943
Hermann Hesse -The Glass Bead Game (1943)
1943 The Glass Bead Game Hermann Hesse
“He read the veinings of a leaf, the pattern on a mushroom cap, and divined mysteries, relations, futures, possibilities: the magic of symbols, the foreshadowing of numbers and writing, the reduction of infinitudes and multiplicities to simplicity, to system, to concept. For all these ways of comprehending the world through the mind no doubt lay within him, nameless, unnamed, but not inconceivable, not beyond the bounds of presentiment, still in the germ, but essential to his nature, part of him, growing organically within him. And if we were to go still further back beyond this Rainmaker and his time which to us seems so early and primitive, if we were to go several thousand years further back into the past, wherever we found man we would still find - this is our firm belief - the mind of man, that mind which has no beginning and always has contained everything that it later produces.” ― Hermann Hesse, The Glass Bead Game, 1943

"A concise history both of publishers' detachable book coverings (primarily British and American) and of the attention they have received from scholars, dealers, collectors, and librarians. It also surveys their use by publishers (as protective devices and advertising media) and their usefulness to scholars of literature, art, and book history (as sources for biography, bibliography, cultural analysis, and the development of graphic design)."

Its author was originally commissioned by a private "collector," along with other well-known writers, to create erotica for his private consumption. It sounds slightly creepy, yes, but the result (which was published posthumously) is a fabulous description of women.Delta of Venus, $9, available at Amazon.
