Children's Book Review: Ox Cart Man
Bookshelf Central Ox-Cart Man [31B3ocm] - We believe that you will really enjoy this selection for your youngest students. A picture book that "describes the day-to-day life throughout the changing seasons of an early 19th-century New England family." Many libraries have this Caldecott Medal winner on their shelves, so check there if you are
Do you remember this book? I think I first discovered it via Reading Rainbow as LeVar Burton read it to his audience. Ox-Cart Man (c. 1979) by Donald Hall with Caldecott award winning illustrations by our beloved Barbara Cooney recalls the days of a 19th century New England family. Take a journey back in time from the moment you open the first page: In October he backed his ox into his cart and he and his family filled it up with everything they made or grew all year long that was left over. A beautiful depiction of early settler life throughout the seasons, Ox-Cart Man takes the ten day travel to town to trade his goods for the necessities for surviving the next year on his family farm.

It would take a deeply cynical heart not to fall in love with Rainer Maria Rilkes Letters to a Young Poet. At the end of this millennium, his slender book holds everything a student of the century...
Letters to a Young Poet Rainer Maria Rilke "To love is good, too: love being difficult. For one human being to love another: that is perhaps the most difficult of all our tasks, the ultimate, the last test and proof, the work for which all other work is but preparation." Rilke on what real love asks of us, and what it gives:

Rilke's Letters To A Young Poet...have patience with everything unresolved in your heart and to try to love the questions themselves as if they were locked rooms or books written in a very foreign language. Don’t search for the answers, which could not be given to you now, because you would not be able to live them. And the point is to live everything. Live the questions now. Perhaps then, someday far in the future, you will gradually, without even noticing it, live your way into the answer.

Worth Reading, Books, Books Worth, Virginia
Translated from the French by John Donovan Paul and Virginia is the classic of naïve love. ‘The second half of the story (told here in Donovan’s elegant translation) has traditionally been read through a mist of tears.’ – Publishers Weekly First published in 1788 and an instant bestseller of great popular appeal, Jacques-Henri Bernardin de Saint-Pierre’s only novel subsequently appeared in hundreds of editions in France and throughout the world. It influenced a generation of French writers including George Sand, Lamartine, Balzac and Flaubert; and it was the favourite book of Napoleon Bonaparte who said it spoke to his soul. Bernardin was inspired by Rousseau to tell the story of a boy and a girl, the offspring of French colonists, who grow up on a paradise island entirely according to nature’s laws, free from the corrupting influence of the world. They reach adolescence and fall in love, but a shipwreck tragedy strikes and both die untimely deaths. In modern times Paul and Virginia provided the inspiration for the film The Blue Lagoon, musicals, paintings, engravings, photographs (including iconic images by the Victorian photographer Julia Margaret Cameron), a hit song by Celine Dion and even a chain of luxury hotels on Mauritius, the island on which the tale takes place. Paul and Virginia is a key text in the development of the novel and essential reading for anyone interested in the history of European literature. This attractive new edition from Peter Owen contains many period engravings. ‘It made the world weep . . . Bernardin has created an authentic myth.’ – Peter Ackroyd, Sunday Times ‘Brought tears to the eyes of both sexes through many generations.’ – Observer ‘The most widely read of French novels . . . one of the great romances of literature . . . the translation by John Donovan is also a work of art; and his introduction a valuable piece of scholarship and appreciation. This is indeed a classic edition.’ –Irish Times ‘A charming example of the pastoral naïve.’ – Guardian JACQUES-HENRI BERNARDIN DE SAINT-PIERRE was born in Le Havre in 1737. WhenPaul and Virginia was published in 1788 he was already well known as a natural historian, but his first novel catapulted him to stardom. In 1792 he was made Superintendent of the Royal Botanical Gardens and later became Professor of Moral Science at the Ecole Normale Supérieure. By the time of his death in 1815 he was President of the French Academy.

Northanger Abbey was the first of Jane Austen's novels to be completed for publication. Austen died in July 1817. Northanger Abbey (as the novel was now called) was brought out posthumously in late December 1817 and takes place partly in Bath. #JaneAusten #Bath
Another one of my favorite books!! There's so many great books to read it's hard choosing one favorite.
One of the first novels Jane Austen worte, it is not as widley read by her other novels but it is filled with similar themes. It was a delight to read
Northanger Abbey, Jane Austin - I'm not so much a Pride and Prejudice fan (screw that pompous Darcy!) as I am a Northanger Abbey groupie. It's my favorite Austen.
"Northanger Abbey" — Jane Austen’s first novel — published posthumously in 1818 — tells the story of Catherine Morland and her dangerously sweet nature, innocence, and frequent self-delusion.

Persuasion by Jane Austen - my favorite Austen novel. Anne Elliot is a much smarter Austen heroine than most.
One of my all time favorite books. I like all of Jane Austen's books, but this one is such a sweet story.
My favorite Jane Austen book! Sensible, practical Anne gets a second chance at love and happiness despite her silly father and selfish sisters.
Started first, yet finished last, by Jane Austen, this is my favorite Austen to re-read over and over again.
Persuasion tied for first place w/Pride and Prejudice as my favorite Jane Austen book
One of the lesser read Jane Austen novels, but definitely among my favorites of hers.
