This is an old photo of Penn Station before it befell the wrecker's ball in 1964. Truly beautiful and grand. It uplifts the spirit. Today, it is long gone and was driven underground for the construction of Madison Square Gardens. CLICK ON THE PHOTO. On my blog, I've written about an article in today's New York Times by the architectural critic. Amazing! Alexander Wainwright [in The Drawing Lesson ] walked through the modern day version of today's Penn Station. He was aghast at the ugliness surrounding him. Where was the beauty he remembered?
Grand Central Terminal, New York City
New York, Pennsylvania Station was razed in 1963.
A famous photograph by Lewis Hine. It shows construction-workers on their lunch-break in the early 1930s. Note the lack of any safety-equipment. This photo isn’t staged and it hasn’t been retouched. The building they’re constructing is the Crysler Building, the building of which, Hines was commissioned to document with his camera
