Serena Williams Is Continuing To Raise Awareness Around Financial Abuse - Blavity
Champion is a word that is readily associated with Serena Williams as a tennis star, but she is now acting as a champion for a cause outside of the sport in which she dominates: financial abuse. Defined as a means of power used by an abuser to control the finances and prevent their partner from leaving a relationship, financial abuse often occurs in domestic violence cases, reports the National Network to End Domestic Violence.

With an increasing volume of victims, agencies across the country are operating with less funding and fewer staff and resources. According to the National Network to End Domestic Violence (NNEDV), nearly 80% of states reported cuts or reduction in programming funds as the demand for services is only increasing.
Stalkerware is a toxic tool for domestic abusers. This coalition wants to stop it.
The new Coalition Against Stalkerware brings together the Electronic Frontier Foundation as well as anti-virus companies like Norton Lifelock, Malwarebytes, and Kaspersky, and organizations like Operation Safe Escape and the European Network for the Work with Perpetrators of Domestic Violence. The other members of the coalition are Avira, G Data Cyber Defense, NNEDV, and Weisser Ring.

“The issue comes up nearly every legislative session. Well-meaning legislators and constituents around the country propose creating a state or national registry that lists domestic violence offenders,” said Corbin Streett, a technology safety specialist with the National Network to End Domestic Violence.
