Verdi by Janell Cannon, Reading Level: O. Fable that tells the story of Verdi, a yellow snake that dreads the day his skin will turn green. He comes to realize, after he does turn green, that regardless of how he looks like on the outside, he is still the same snake on the inside. How to Heal a Broken Wing I purchased this book last year and my class loved the beautiful story about a little bird who is lying on the sidewalk with a broken wing. Everyone is in such a hurry that they walk by without even noticing. Everyone that is, except a small boy. He takes the bird home and cares for it until it is ready to be set free. This is a beautiful story.

August Pullman was born with a severe facial deformity and was home schooled. Starting 5th grade at Beecher Prep, he wants to be treated like an ordinary kid—but his new classmates can’t get past Auggie’s face. The story begins from Auggie’s point of view, but switches to include classmates, his sister, and her boyfriend. These perspectives converge into a portrait of one community’s struggle with empathy, compassion, and acceptance. Everyone should read this book. Appropriate for all ages.
