Teddy Roosevelt’s diary entry from the day his wife died. He never spoke of her death again. Ironically, Theodore Roosevelt's mother Mittie died of typhoid fever on the same day, at 3 am, some eleven hours earlier, in the same house. After the nearly simultaneous deaths of his mother and wife, Roosevelt left his daughter in the care of his sister, Anna "Bamie/Bye" in New York City. In his diary, he wrote a large 'X' on the page and then, "The light has gone out of my life." (See diary photo).

This photograph shows the "Freedom Stairway," the one hundred steps leading from the Ohio River to the John Rankin House in Ripley, a station on the Underground Railroad. John Rankin (1793-1886) was a Presbyterian minister and educator who devoted much of his life to the antislavery movement. The house has several secret rooms in which slaves were hidden. A light was placed in the window of the house to indicate that it was safe for slaves to approach. Ohio Historical Society SC 1591

The liner "Queen Elizabeth" bringing American troops into NY Harbor at the end of WW II, 1945. Queen Elizabeth joined the war effort as a troopship in 1940. Her high speed allowed her to travel without escort as she could outrun U-boats easily. In the five years of troopship service, she carried 750,000 troops and covered half a million miles.

The Hindenburg - May 6, 1937 - Lakehurst Naval Air Station, located adjacent to the borough of Lakehurst, New Jersey. Heavy publicity about the first transatlantic passenger flight of the year by Zeppelin to the U.S. attracted a large number of journalists to the landing. (The airship had already made one round trip from Germany to Brazil that year.)

Hindenburg Disaster, 1937 took place on Thursday, May 6, as the German passenger airship LZ 129 Hindenburg caught fire and was destroyed during its attempt to dock with its mooring mast at the Lakehurst Naval Air Station, which is located adjacent to the borough of Lakehurst, New Jersey. The incident shattered public confidence in the giant, passenger-carrying rigid airship and marked the end of the airship era. (photo by Murray Becker: The Hindenburg Disaster, 1937)

July 20, 1969 -- I at art school in Chicago & we gathered around a TV to watch the landing. My dad, who worked at Alcoa, made the die for the ladder they used to get onto the moon & I called him & teased him about hoping "his" ladder held up so that they wouldn't fall down and leave something other than a foot print on the moon. A few weeks later, there was a huge ticker tape parade down Michigan Avenue & we all watched out the windows from my art school and watched. It was very cool!
July 20, 1969 This was my 19th birthday present. We bought an old tv at a pawn shop in Kileen, Texas to watch the landing on.
