It became very popular and was told over and over. This shortened version of the tale is appropriate for Bear Cub Scouts working on Bear Achievement 4 – Tall Tales.

I’m a big fan of positive discipline. It works to create a respectful relationship with your child. Recent studies have shown that children have an instinctual need and desire to connect with others, especially their parents or caregivers. This connection is often hurt by negative discipline and power struggles. Children learn by example, so it’s best to treat them how you expect them to treat others. This also teaches them valuable life and social skills. To create a respectful, healthy relationship with your child, positive discipline is needed to teach mutual respect and to grow a close bond with each other. Here are some great alternatives to punishment that will hopefully make your connection with your child stronger. 1. Look for underlying needs as the reason your child is acting out. For example: Low blood sugar, tiredness, or boredom. Try to address those needs without getting angry at or punishing your child. We all get a little grumpy sometimes. 2. Ask your child what they are feeling and REALLY listen to them. A lot of the time children just want to be acknowledged. Feelings should ALWAYS be accepted. It is never wrong for someone to feel the way they feel. It is, however, wrong if they act out those feelings in a harmful way. Children need to be taught how to deal with their strong emotions and given alternatives to get their anger out, such as crying or hitting a pillow. 3. Explain reasons why they can’t do something. It doesn’t help your child much when they just hear “no” with no reasons or alternatives. For example: If your child colors on the wall, explain why we only color on paper. Or if you don’t want them to tear apart your living room to build a fort, don’t simply tell them no. Tell them where they can build a fort. 4. Give choices rather than commands. Children feel empowered when they make decisions for themselves. They will also usually do things more willingly when it was their decision. Example: ask them if they want to brush their teeth or get their pajamas on first. 5. Let natural consequences occur (when appropriate). Don’t always rescue your child from everything or they won’t realize what happens if they do something wrong (within safe measure of course). But don’t create artificial consequences. It can be a valuable life lesson and punishment in itself to have something happen naturally. Example: Your child won’t hang up their wet swimsuit and realize it’s all soggy the next day. 6. Remove your child from the situation and stay with them. Sometimes children do need a timeout but they should not be left alone to think they’re being punished. Take this time to acknowledge your child’s feelings and to let them calm down. Explain to them why they needed a timeout and why their behavior wasn’t appropriate, but accept their feelings. 7. Prepare your child before something is expected from them. Children need warnings for leaving from the …

Meditation seemed like a good idea at the time. Calming. Earth-motherish. Someone sent me a link to a program she’s developed which includes an online video with images and commentary with which to centre one’s scattered mind easily and quickly. Bring it on, I thought, and hit ‘play’ without reading the paragraph about choosing a time when you’re unlikely to be interrupted.
