Print, 1825. A generic caricature of a midshipman - a trainee naval officer- on half pay, which officers were placed on when not actively employed at sea. Midshipmen were paid so little they suffered hardship as a result unless they had other means.
Black glass artificial horizon
c. 1815. The artificial horizon is contained in a fitted rectangular wooden box, that also contains a box sextant by Gilbert and Sons (NAV1220) and a pocket compass (NAV0466). This instrument belonged to Edward Newell Harrison, clerk of HMS ‘Assistance’. He went to the Arctic in 1850-51 in search of Sir John Franklin, and died in the West Indies before 1855.
