Fairytale Castles

My oldest daughter fell in love with some photos of the Fairytale Castles years ago and dreamed of going. In 2008, that dream came true and we were able to visit some of the castles she had seen in the photos. We want to visit Fairy Tale castles all over the world with her little daughter and my granddaughter, Sophia. We have a lot of traveling to do.

Fountains Abbey - Technically not a castle, but it looks like one. Tucked away in a scenic river valley just outside Ripon, Fountain's Abbey is a World Heritage Site and a picture of medieval grandeur. Once a towering Cirstercian monastery, it's now a well-preserved ruin, rich in atmosphere and surrounded by lush green landscapes. On the same estate you'll find the soothing Georgian water gardens of Studley Royal.

Mighty Caernarfon is possibly the most famous of Wales's castles. Its sheer scale and commanding presence easily set it apart from the rest, and to this day, still trumpet in no uncertain terms the intention of its builder Edward I. Begun in 1283 as the definitive chapter in his conquest of Wales, Caernarfon was constructed not only as a military stronghold but also as a seat of government and royal palace.

Built by Ludwig II, it served as inspiration to Walt Disney for both Snow White's Castle at Disney Land and Cinderella's Castle at Disney World. This winter view is stunning.
