Well, duh.  Why didn't I think of this?!  Great hint - and a lot cheaper than those turning tools that never seem to work the way they're supposed to.  From Blooms N Bugs -  sewing fabric tubes

Needle felted flamingo. I used Cushing's Perfection Dyes, pink & salmon, to color the wool. Beak and those big ol' feet are made of paper clay.  I covered the wire legs in several layers of floral tape.

Pom pom sheep.  This little guy started out on a hairpin loom.  The legs were done in separate pieces.  I wasn't excited about the way it looked when I was finished, so I just grabbed a skein of pencil roving and went to town.

Pom pom animals. Scottie - sculpted wool. I made this little guy on a handmade loom. You wrap wool around the loom, sew on 18-gauge wire, and then shape the wool with scissors. Messy - I go through vacuum cleaner bags like crazy!
