Casa Batlló by Antoni Gaudi, Barcelona Spain. 1904-6
Antoni Gaudi - Barcelona, Catalonia Casa Batlló, is a building restored by Antoni Gaudí and Josep Maria Jujol, built in the year 1877 and remodelled in the years 1904-1906; located at 43, Passeig de Gràcia (passeig is Catalan for promenade or avenue), part of the Illa de la Discòrdia in the Eixample district of Barcelona, Spain. The local name for the building is Casa dels ossos (House of Bones), and indeed it does have a visceral, skeletal organic quality. It was originally designed for a middle-class family and situated in a prosperous district of Barcelona...The building looks very remarkable -- like everything Gaudí designed, only identifiable as Modernisme or Art Nouveau in the broadest sense. The ground floor, in particular, is rather astonishing with tracery, irregular oval windows and flowing sculpted stone work.

Casa Batlló was originally built between 1875 and 1877. In 1900 it was bought by the rich industrialist Josep Battló i Casanovas who commissioned Gaudí to tear down the old house and reconstruct a new one. Gaudí however convinced Battló to remodel the existing building. Between 1904 and 1906 Gaudí redesigned the facade and roof, added an extra floor and completely remodeled the interior.

Favorite place in Barcelona! Located in Barcelona, Spain - Casa Batlló is one of the two great buildings designed by Antoni Gaudi on Passeig de Gracia, the other being La Pedrera From the outside the façade of Casa Batlló looks like it has been made from skulls and bones. The "Skulls" are in fact balconies and the "bones" are supporting pillars.

Gaudi's work is admired by architects around the World as being one of the most unique and distinctive architectural styles. His work has greatly influenced the face of Barcelona Architecture and you will see Gaudi's work all over the city. Antoni Gaudi was born in Reus in 1852 and received his Architectural degree in 1878. From the very beginning his designs were different from those of his contemporaries. Gaudi's work was greatly influenced by forms of nature and this is reflected by the use of curved construction stones, twisted iron sculptures, and organic-like forms which are traits of Gaudi's Barcelona architecture. Gaudi also adorned many of his buildings with coloured tiles arranged in mosaic patterns. This added another important dimension to his buildings which is so often overlooked by architects - the use of colour. The combination of original design, interesting shaped stonework, and vibrant colours in Gaudi's work give the viewer a truly breathtaking visual experience.

Art Blog: Waterhouse J.W. Boreas
Brrr... 'Boreas' by artist John William Waterhouse ◈ (In Greek mythology Boreas was god of the north wind.) Waterhouse masterfully captures the feel of a chilly wind kicking up as a storm rolls in on a fickle spring evening. The artist's touch of tucking a daffodil in the long, dark tresses of the young woman is a charming detail.
Boreas by John William Waterhouse. Not much about this piece that I do not admire. Simply the beauty of the movement and the detailed of the cloth is breathtaking.
Boreas - John William Waterhouse (1902) a little Pre Raphaelite love...
Boreas is an oil painting in the Pre-Raphaelite style created in 1903 by John William Waterhouse. The painting is titled Boreas, after the Greek god of the north wind and it shows a young girl buffeted by the wind. Boreas was put up for sale in the mid-1990s after having been lost for 90 years - causing quite a sensation in the art community. The painting achieved a record price for Waterhouse at that time, achieving a price £848,500 ($1,293,962USD).
