Florence Nightingale (1820-1910), reformer of English nursing, received the Order of Merit for her tireless efforts during the Crimean War. She was the first female recipient of this honor. She is celebrated as an English social reformer and statistician, and the founder of modern nursing.
Norma Des Cygne Smallwood, a full blood Cherokee, from Tulsa, OK. While a student at Oklahoma State Univ., she entered the Miss America pageant in 1926. She was crowned the first Native American to win the title. Her keen business sense during her reign caused her to earn more than either Babe Ruth or the president of the U.S.A. at the time.
Delany Sisters , Daughters of emancipated slaves, Sadie (1889-1999) and Bessie (1891-1995) were civil rights activists. Sadie was the first African American woman to teach Domestic Science and Bessie the second to be granted a dentistry license in NY state.
A box-bed is a bed enclosed in furniture that looks like a cupboard, half-opened or not.The box-bed is closed on all sides by panels of wood. One enters it by removing curtains, opening a door hinge or sliding doors on one or two slides. In front of the box-bed was often a large oaken chest, with the same length as the bed. This was the 'seat of honour,' and served also as a step for climbing into the bed. It was also used to store clothing, underwear and bedding the rest of the time
