Marlene Dietrich was completely focused on her image. She would patiently wait through exacting fittings for her custom clothing. She always dressed when she went out and always demanded that her gowns be "a la Dietrich." For her personal wardrobe she turned to Irene (Lentz), and after Banton left Paramount, she had Irene design her film costumes as well. One such design is shown above, and Marlene looked fetching in this Irene-designed beaded outfit for The Lady is Willing, 1942.

The Antidote • When the girls dress like the boys in white tie...
Marlene Dietrich, because everybody should wear top hats.
Before Bjork’s swan dress there was Marlene Dietrich. Love Bjork, but Marlene did it better. Miss Marlene arrived at Basil Rathbone's costume party with Clifton Webb and Elizabeth Allen on each arm and an elegant swan gown draped across her body. Oh...and the swan wasn't white, each feather was dyed to match the pale blue of Marlene's eyes.

Bjork's swan dress was but a rip-off of Marlene's swan dress. Clifton Webb, Marlene Dietrich, and Elizabeth Allan at a Hollywood theme party held by Basil Rathbone and wife Ouida Bergere in 1935. The theme was "The Person You Most Admire." Dietrich chose Leda of the famous fable, while her escort for the night, Elizabeth Allen, went as Dietrich.
Clifton Webb, Marlene Dietrich and Elizabeth Allan at Basil Rathbone’s Halloween party, 1935.- Does anyone think this Swan dress may have been the inspiration for Bjorks ill-fated Oscars dress???
