#### I was scanning the clearance aisle at Wal-Mart today and found a pack of large die cut apples for 50 cents! So I made number puzzles to put in math stations this week since it is Johhny's birthday and all. I made one for numbers 1-10. I'm thinking I need to go on and make 11-20 for my higher kids.

#### For when I teach math one day

#### I was scanning the clearance aisle at Wal-Mart today and found a pack of large die cut apples for 50 cents! So I made number puzzles to put in math stations this week since it is Johhny's birthday and all. I made one for numbers 1-10. I'm thinking I need to go on and make 11-20 for my higher kids. We've been slowly working on addition strategies and finding as many combinations of each number as we can. So this activity will be a good review/reinforcement of what we've been practicing. Here's a picture from a few weeks ago when we were working on making 5's. This game is called "shake and spill". The kids put 5 counting chips in a cup, shake them up, spill them, color what they spilled, and then write an equation. That orange thing is a little foam mat so the counting chips don't hit their desks and make so much noise, but if they all had their notebooks out like this little guy I guess that would've worked too. Also, 21 kids shaking up counters in a cup is almost deafening so I don't know why I even tried to make the spilling part quiet. It made sense at the time. On another note, did anyone know that Wal-Mart now has a 97 cent area much like Target's dollar bins? I'm not loving it as much as Target's but I give them an E for effort and there were some very cute teachery notepads, stickers, bookmarks, and tote bags. I bought some super cute cupcake sticky notes and plastic (reusable, not throw away) plates for a friend's upcoming birthday. Maybe I'll fill the plates with cupcakes or maybe I'll try and make one of these cake stands I've seen on pinterest. Anyone tried this yet?

#### Kids math

#### This DIY math game for kids is a great learning tool for kids who learn well by moving their whole bodies. I have one of those kids. Do you? When he’s not quite grasping a concept, I know it’s time to put away the books and papers and get moving. Here’s how we made a place value game to reinforce the concepts we were learning. We focused on hundreds of thousands on down, but one of my younger kids used this for thousands on down. You can adapt it to your needs. What you need: Painter’s tape. Sharpie permanent marker. Paper and scissors. How to make the game: First, I made the game board with painter’s tape on our wood floor and wrote the place values onto the tape with the Sharpie pen. I made a comma out of tape and colored it with the Sharpie. Next, we traced my son’s feet onto paper and photocopied the paper so that we had about 20 feet total. We wrote numbers on the paper feet so that we had enough to use each number at least twice. Ways to play: I put a number on the board, such as 567,891 and he stomped on each number as he read it out loud. I read a number to him, such as 852,940 and he put it on the board, then stomped it as he repeated the number. The tricky zeroes: When a zero was in one of the places (except for the very last ones place), it made it even tricker. We practiced putting zeroes in one or more places: 700,672 or 750,812 or 789,002. What comes next? I would put 212,799 on the board and he would “turn it” to the next number, followed by stomping out the whole number. Another fun part of the game? Clearing the board! For more fun ways to learn math with your hands (or feet), visit our Math Pinterest board.

### A Picture Book That Pushes the Growth Mindset

#### The Most Magnificent Thing by Ashley Spires will help you to initiate a conversation with about the importance of possessing a growth mindset. It's also a fantastic mentor text for writing workshop...

#### Someone can accomplish a lot more through #hardwork and #dedication, rather than by relying on their smarts alone. Educators know the benefits of having a #growthmindset, rather than having a fixed one. We learn from trial and error. There is value in failure. Use this book to initiate a conversation with students about the importance of possessing a growth mindset. #trytryagain #workhard #middleschool #readaloud #personaldevelopment

#### A picture book that pushes the Growth Mindset - The Most Magnificent Thing by Ashley Spires

#### Books That Heal Kids: Book Review: The Most Magnificent Thing

#### Jen Vincent at Teach Mentor Texts and Kellee Moye and Ricki Ginsburg at Unleashing Readers cohost It's Monday! What are You Reading? weekly on their blogs. To see what others are reading and recommending each Monday, or to participate, be sure to head over to these blogs. The Most Magnificent Thing by Ashley Spires is a perfect picture book to read aloud to discuss the concept of having a growth mindset vs. a fixed mindset. In this story, a little girl is trying to create something magnificent, but continues to struggle. She gets frustrated and even walks away, but ends up going back to her project to attempt it again and again. This text shows and reminds the reader that ideas we have in our minds or projects we attempt to do successfully, won't always go the way we want them to go. However, it is important that we continue to try and not give up on our dreams, plans, and goals. This is a perfect book to read aloud at the beginning of the year when introducing the concept of having a growth mindset and what it means to persevere. I can easily see this book being a mentor text throughout the year, being revisited again to discuss the power of mindset. Enjoy reading this week! :)

#### Summer has finally arrived, and with it, came a wealth of fabulous reads....I can hardly keep up. Because of this plethora, the next few weeks' postings will feature a couple of great books each. ENJOY!! This week we are posting two really fun picture books. The Most Magnificent Thing by Ashley Spires Spires wrote Small Saul and a graphic novel series with Binky the Space Cat, both of which I need to seek out. I recently used the most magnificent Thing as a stepping off point in my work with teachers. Interesting things happen when you start with the lurking possibility of failure! I will be honest: I expect if my mother read this book, she would see me in it. If you know me, you might even say that is me on the cover...except I would be wearing shorts and my hair would not be as neat. But, dear reader, do you see yourself in the book? The girl in the book creates. She always has her "trusty assistant" at her side. She is always gathering, imagining, scheming, and building. Until one day when her work doesn't work, when she can't make the thing she really wants to make. She gets ticked and blows her top. "It is not her finest moment." But how does she find her way out of her anger? What lies beyond her failures? You gotta read it to find out. Great artwork, phrasing is just right, and enterable for any age reader. Loved this one. My Teacher is a Monster! by Peter Brown Peter Brown is known for his masterful writing. I loved (and use in my classroom) The Curious Garden, and Mr Tiger Goes Wild has recieved numerous awards. Here we get his take on the nasty, mean teacher, yeah, the one who looks and sounds like a monster. As usual, his illustrations lead us into that dastardly world immediately! Bobby obviously is the most perfect boy in his school. Mrs. Kirby yells, roars, stomps, and makes life in general ugly for said perfect boy. Life becomes really ugly one day at the park. There he sees.....the dreadful MRS. KIRBY! But as is often true in picture books, some surprises occur... Brown offers us a fun reflection on days in schools and the people whom we interact with. And, as a teacher transitioning into the kindergarten classroom, he gives me a terrific tool for a read aloud and an even-more solid message: look beneath the monster.

#### It's Monday! What are you reading? was started by Sheila at Book Journey and was adapted for children's books from pictures books through YA by Jen of Teacher Mentor Texts and Kellee of Unleashing Readers. You can visit either site for a round up of blogs sharing their weekly readings and thoughts or search Twitter for #IMWAYR. Picture Books The Most Magnificent Thing by Ashley Spires. This fabulous new (2014) picture book by Ashley Spires, the author of the Binky the Space Cat graphic novels, chronicles the trials and tribulations of the nameless main character as she attempts to build the most magnificent thing. I am looking forward to using this book to further class conversations about creativity, frustration, and perfectionism. I love the combination of styles in the illustrations and think this book will spur lots of conversation in our Mock Caldecott discussions as well. Dark Emperor & Other Poems of the Night by Joyce Sidman and illustrated by Rick Allen. This collection of poetry and nonfiction is a Newbery Honor Book from 2010. Each two-page spread has an original poem on the left-hand page and a detailed paragraph of matching information on the right-hand page. I appreciate the different styles and forms of the poems, including those both with and without rhyme schemes. This would also be a great book to use for Science integration about nocturnal animals, communities, or predator-prey relationships. Young Adult The Ascendance Trilogy by Jennifer A. Nielsen. I finished Book One: The False Prince last week and Book Two: The Runaway King this week. (I am eagerly in the hold line for Book Three: The Shadow Throne from the library.) I found out about this book from Pernille Ripp's 10 Chapter Books My Students Say You Need post from her fifth graders. There were several books that were new to me on that list, as well as some old favorites. The False Prince is a gripping adventure tale of a group of orphans selected for their similarities to the missing and presumed dead Prince Jaron. The story is immediately interesting and engaging, drawing on a long history of medieval-style imaginary kingdoms. The book is aimed towards readers in grades 5-8 and does contain violence and scary situations that might be inappropriate for younger readers.
